Renewable

When a historic building in Melbourne is not demolished it may have a saved frontage and be reinvented, which is what I expect is happening here, with possibly a high rise building behind the facade.

This photo is dated November 2022.

In July 2023 this is what I saw at the rear. Kind of sad really but that is my mood at the moment anyway.

It's worth embiggening this photo to read about Kurt Cobain.

  1. Definitely sad. I hope in the fullness of time you will show us the new building. The facade was apparently kept on a relatively new build in the suburb my mama lived in. I cannot tell. It looks totally different.
The graffiti above the Kurt Cobain story (which I didn't know) is truth. Though I probably would describe myself as a feminist.

    1. EC, you can be sure I will show you what happens there. The feminist thought was food for the mind.

  2. There doesn't appear to be much left to salvage there?

    1. JayCee, no, not really. It will be just the lower facade if it is kept. I don't like this facadism with a high rise tower behind. It does not add to the city at all.

    2. Better to build the highrise with a facade to match or emulate the original.

    1. Roentare, that is thought provoking and there may be some truth there.

  4. I kind of like the idea of saving the old facade.

    1. It is good Bob, but ultimately not with a high rise residential tower behind. It was a large low storey building that could have been turned into nice apartments.

  5. People present themselves to the world but in life as in architecture you never know what lies behind the facade.

    1. YP, no you never know, as the battered wife tried to explain to the police.

  6. That is a a sad sight. I hope it is temporary while the developer gets approval to rebuild.

  7. This is like an old movie set of a Western street. Just a facade.

  8. That looks like it was a squat for a while. I wonder where the occupants are now. On the street?

    1. I thought backpacker accommodation Caro, but you are probably right, a squat.

  9. That poor building. I hope someone steps in to put it back to rights. Kurt Cobain was a sad case. I loved Nirvana. What happened? I don't know. No one ever will, I expect, but it cannot be denied that he was on a rapidly descending spiral. The one that I've always felt badly for is his daughter. She appears to be doing alright for herself these days.

    1. Debby, I must have a look at his daughter. I have no knowledge. I've always found bad boys interesting.

  10. It may have been a historical building, but did it have heritage protection?

    1. Margaret, Cobain was quite an interesting bloke. Not really my kind of music though.

  12. Hmm, so the vandals just concentrated on the building's rear. Probably so they wouldn't get caught.

    1. You could say that Kirk, but I don't know what happened behind the facade in the past.

  13. So many conspiracy theories!

London also has many buildings that are essentially just facades. I don't think it's so bad, really -- a good way to modernize structures while preserving the overall look of the street and the city.

  14. They do a lot of that saving the facade and attaching some huge thing behind it. It seems to be a really popular thing. Sometimes it works.

  15. That Cobain quote reminded me of my father in my time telling me never to act smarter than the men i worked it and never, ever buy my own car as no decent man would want me. So basically act stupid.I opted for non-stupid.
