It seems like California is the most progressive state in the US. It is certainly the largest by population and by economy. CA is the power house state in the US. Yet, how often has the President visited the state during his second term in office. Just once, in 2025 after the terrible Los Angeles fires, and even then tried to blame the state government for the fires.
So why? Is he too old to travel? Or is that he knows he is generally hated on the west coast and there are no votes to be gained by visiting these states?
This question arose in my mind because I never hear a news story about #47 in California. I've never heard it reported that #47 avoids the west coast, but when my suspicions were confirmed by a little checking, it really is extraordinary that he never visits the most populous and economic powerhouse state.
Of 59 interstate trips, (after discounting Florida, where he be visiting his ghastly gilt 'palace') in 2025 he made only one visit to California.
Of 15 trips, so far this year, none have been to California.
This would be unheard of in Australia, although at times federal politicians do tend avoid states where they are unpopular, but they know they must at the least fly the flag at times.
Aside from enriching himself and his cohorts, I don't understand why he is trying to destroy democracy, inclusion, world respect for the US, its long kinship with Canada, the decent hard working poor, the less fortunate in society, in fact alienating everyone he possibly can, except for his demented MAGA folk, the Basket of Deplorables.
I once thought it would not take long for the US to recover after #47, but now I am less certain. Other countries, as the learnt lesson was to future proof themselves during Covid, have now diversified their economies from the US.
It is not just #47. It is the Republican Party that tolerates his outrageousness, the Democrats who vote for his policies and don't call him out. Worst of all is the 1/3 of voters, 77 million, who actually voted for #47.
A tax cheat, a multiple bankrupt, a rapist, a paedophile and the creator of ICE, which is like a paramilitary army, that kill US citizens who have done nothing wrong, and a war monger.
I just don't understand but what I do understand is that the world now needs to protect itself from US interests and the government's outrageous actions. The government can no longer be considered a reliable friend nor partner to Australia.

ReplyDeleteI don't live in the USA so I cannot comment other than to say who would want that dreadful man visiting you anyway. I do know that Victoria is riddled with CFMEU corruption supported by the last two premiers and crime is on a dreadful scale and there are homeless camped on city streets .. As citizens we need to demand more of the politicians we vote for .They are supposed to be our employees working for us, not the party they represent.
ReplyDeleteThe corruption within the Big Build is very disappointing. The oversight of the projects should have been much better. Bean counters is used as a slur, but there should have been some first class bean counters.

DeleteFor myself I have vowed to NEVER EVER set foot in the US. and am now carefully checking where imported fruits and vegetables come from. Mostly I buy "home grown in SA" anyway, so it isn't a big issue, but anything from the US goes back on the shelf.
ReplyDeleteI have online friends who live there and am very sorry for what they now have to put up with. I hope all the Democrats who stay home and think "my one vote can't possibly make a difference" realise that if 100 or more "my one voters" get off their couches and VOTE, things might get turned around for the better.
Watch out for the oranges, River. I find them too much trouble to eat but I know they are often imported from the US in our off season.

DeleteI grew up in California and now live one state further north (Oregon).
ReplyDeleteTrump has a childish disdain for states that didn't go for him in his elections. He has even withheld emergency disaster-relief funds from those states, something no previous president ever did. Every one of them realized his responsibility was to the entire country regardless of partisan leanings.
He was always a malignant con man, but more recently it's obvious he has severe dementia. Just look at his social media posts -- they're just incoherent babbling about whatever he happens to be angry about at the moment.
He did originally tap into some legitimate anger, especially among Republican voters, but has not done anything about the underlying issues, although that anger does motivate a segment of the population to cheer for his cruelty with ICE and suchlike. Republican politicians will not stand up to Trump because they're afraid of their own voters. There are a lot of angry and frustrated people out there who still consider him their champion, and remember half the population of this country has guns. When Trump calls somebody a traitor, it's genuinely dangerous.
The reason he behaves as he does toward other countries is that he does not understand the difference between respect and fear. His attitude is that the United States is the biggest toughest guy on the block and others should just fall into line out of fear. Such arrogance destroys respect and cooperation and inspires resistance, but he doesn't understand that. He admires people like Putin and Kim who rule by fear in their own countries, because he wishes he could do the same.
Other countries are wise to safeguard their independence. The pathologies that led to Trump being elected have not gone away, and will still exist after he is gone.

DeleteI refer to that swollen orange blimp as The Fake President. He's fake because he's on the make - enriching himself and his family. Perversely, I gain some satisfaction from the obvious decline in his physical and mental health. The pompous sucker used to regularly refer to President Biden as "Sleepy Joe" but now The Fake President falls asleep on camera all the time. Putin's underhand interference in US elections in 2016 and 2024 have had their intended chaotic and divisive result. As you suggest, it will be difficult for the real America to resurrect itself - like rebuilding a devastated island after a powerful hurricane has passed over it.
