Aids for the ageing

I was in Port Melbourne and there is a rare shop there, a Reject Shop. They used to be everywhere. It is somewhat like a $2 shop/£1 shop. I had no intention of buying anything there but I did. I bought some tinsel, I checked the price of the store's dishwasher detergent tablets to confirm it was still the cheapest, and I bought a twin roll of small garbage bags.

Then I found myself in the old person's aisle. So I bought a set of steps and a kneeling mat.

Lordy, I had spent over $20.

"Kosov, are you impressed with what I have bought?"

"Yes Andrewww."

The steps are brill and I am sure in the future the kneeling mat will be useful. I've been using a milk crate to reach shelves. The steps have non slip feet.

"Kosov, when Phyllis returns you can borrow the kneeling mat." While he has a deepish voice, he shrieked, Andewww. What fun to shock young people. I remember being shocked myself when I was young at what some gay men would come out with, much worse than I did to Kosov about the kneeling mat, or Phyllis for that matter.

  1. Good that you can still shock the young. We still have a Reject Shop in a shopping mall nearby. V useful - though I don't think I have every spent $20 there.

    1. EC, one never intends to spend money in such shops but so often it is inevitable.

    1. JayCee, a gay acquaintance in the building who I know well enough uses the name Norty but Nice as his moniker on hook up sites. Dick Emery or John Inman? One of one of their quotes.

    2. Maybe an allusion to "Santa Claus is coming to town."

    1. Roentare, Kosov finds it very amusing when I start to complain about something outside of home, such as today about covering over tram windows with advertising. He was laughing as explained. I think that has been some chat behind my back.

  4. Aids for the aged are usually embarrassing. Since I have been walking with a walking frame, people have stopped to help me cross the road. Very kind but humiliating.

    1. Hels, yes the point of the walking frame is that you can confidently cross the road. People do mean well, but... Have you thought of a wheeled walker? Things can be carried in the walker container.

  6. We have a reject shop here in the city, maybe I will buy a step now that you have mentioned it is non-slip. I have one from Ikea, bought years ago, but it slips if I am not careful.

    1. Fun60, well you being so fit, perhaps you can continue to climb on furniture. I already have a three step ladder, but this is so easy to get out and use.

Looks an ok stool and kneeling pad, we have a reject shop not too far from home but we don't frequent it often.

    1. This one is very close to a supermarket, Margaret, so it is easy to stroll through and see lots of things that interest me but that I don't really need.

  9. We use milk crates for steps, too. We really should replace them . . .

    1. Note to self, milk crates aren't great in bare feet, that's for sure.

  13. Shocking the young is a skill I have too. I won an award from grandgirl's gang when she was a teenager as having the filthiest mouth of a grandma EVER. I could spend $20 in a $1 store easily. Stuff I never thought I needed.
I have steps like those too very handy.

  14. Is a Reject Shop similar to our US Goodwill and Salvation Army stores selling used, donated items? A gal on Youtube shows cooking experiments that sometimes showcase vintage cookware. We've considered looking locally. Be well!

    1. No Darla. I sells brand new and very cheap. Don't expect good quality but it has its place. We call second hand shops where you buy clothes or items for you house etc, an Op Shop, Op for opportunity.

  15. After my father and aunt died in their eighties I was struck by the number of devices each had about the house for illumination and magnification.

Almost 10 years later I can appreciate that much better.
