Creatures of the deep and not so deep

Fire Fighting Nephew, his wife and their five year old daughter asked if would like to join them for a birthday outing for their twin two year old boys. Ex Sis in Law who is FFN's mother and her husband joined us. Everyone met here and the eight of us trammed to the aquarium. I need to add this was a few weeks ago. Here are some photos from the outing. We managed to miss the penguins.

I was so annoyed at the awful wayfinding and signage, I lodged a complaint on the company's website.

Coral I guess. Ever so pretty.

This was a massive crocodile, and I mean massive.

From the aquarium terrace.

God knows what this creature is. An eel?

WTF?

Just think of Jaws music.

  1. I would have loved to have been there. When/if I get to Melbourne again the aquarium is on my wish list.

    1. EC, I think I've visited the aquarium four times, always with children. I'd like to go on my own on a quiet time without the distractions of children.

    2. I'm with you on visiting during quieter hours. ~nods~ The Newport Aquarium (just about an hour south of our home across the Ohio/Kentucky US border) is amazing. I've been wanting to revisit the place; its stunning jellyfish exhibit is aptly called a gallery and alone worth the time/money. Alas, unplanned financial expenditures keep getting in the way. But life is good, so whatever. Anyway, thanks for sharing these images!

    3. Darla, jellyfish are fascinating to watch and I love watching sea horses too.

  2. Some interesting looming creatures there. Is that WTF lurking in the red coral some sort of moray eel?

    1. I had seniors discount Roentare, which reduced the price a little. If you joined the queue to enter, you will be asked to leave and buy your ticket from a machine and go to the back of the queue. No signage to say that.

  6. You saw some pretty weird and scary creatures at the aquarium. Were you frightened?
Bad signage is also one of my pet hates.

    1. Only by the crowds and the hard work YP, not the creatures. The more I think about the signage, even at the entrance, the more cross I feel.

  7. I love aquariams too. I snorkeled in Hawaii and was horrified and amazed to see how much was under the water. It was terrifying too, but I did it.

    1. Pixie, I snorkelled on our Great Barrier Reef and I found it to be a magical experience. The wonders of what were in the water was amazing.

  8. I know and agree that all animals have to be protected. But it is difficult to enjoy seeing killer crocs thrive.

    1. Hels, as top predators, crocs are an important part of our ecological system. I trust the numbers are suitably controlled by culling.

  9. Yes, an eel and the WTF looks like another eel with some coral wrapped around it. I love aquariums, where else could we see such fish without going deep sea diving? Danger free too. Beautiful view from the deck.

    1. River, is that what it is around the eel, coral? That makes sense, rather than weird growths. Beautiful also when walking under the fish in the glass tunnel.

  10. I'm with River - can't recall being to an aquarium ever, of course we used to have one here at home years ago.
Nice you could get together and enjoy Andrew.

    1. Yes, the get together was good Margaret. I think home aquariums require a lot of time and devotion to maintain.

    1. Fun60, I suppose you have a large aquarium in your city but I've never heard of one.

  12. It's interesting to see into another world with its amazing inhabitants. I'm sure the children enjoyed it.

    1. JB, the children certainly enjoyed it, as they ran from one tank to another, just as children have done so in our care over the years.

  14. It's interesting to see such big aquarium and watch colorful or strange looking creatures. I saw a very huge one in France (of course they say it's the biggest in Europe, but everything in France is big, unique etc (that's what they think) so I doubt, anyway I saw it once that was enough, I prefer animals you can pet ! With all the rain we have since months I wouldn't be surprised to meet a fish in the street !

  15. Looks like a great day out. The Penguins will be glad to see you the next time you are near. They are very forgiving as long as you bring fish.

  16. TP, previously I have seen the penguins fed. They have hearty appetites.

  18. I think you're getting back to normal Andrew, to file that complaint over directional signage. I should do that with whomever makes Oregon trail maps, as they're so horrendously out of scale, no wonder so many get lost, like in the gorge.

    1. Strayer, really, maps should not be out of scale unless there is a reason. Maybe they are more guides than maps?

  19. I would think that signage is an important thing in a place like this. You want to know what you are seeing, Andrew.
