Monday Mural

Sami will have a Monday Mural post and so do I.

This one is massive, painted on a Prahran College of Technology building in Windsor, once known as Prahran Tech (Prahran Technical School), a secondary school for those who wished to become tradesmen(sic).

The mural is interesting but not particularly exciting. Can you make anything from it at all?

  3. The young lady in the mural is Anna Seymour, a deaf contemporary dancer.
Here's an article about her and the artist Guido van Helten.

    1. Wonderful, Damselfly. I heard Anna interviewed on the radio once. Thank you so much.

    2. I'm glad to learn this, as well. ~nods~ This striking image makes sense now.

    3. Darla, I suppose there is a story behind most murals and there certainly is with this one.

  4. I was not impressed initially but after reading the links Damselfly posted I appreciate it so much more. I guess context makes things clearer. The video is amazing. If I had studied my doomed Auslan course on campus that is where I would have been. And I was worried I wouldn't be able to find it!

    1. Caro, I assumed your course would have in Frankston or nearby. Prahran would have been a long way for you to travel. Down High Street to St Kilda Road is what we used to call the Deaf and Dumb School. I don't know what it is now called, but it is interesting to observe how the students communicate when catching trams home from school. A late friend used to teach fabric design at the Prahran campus. The students could be challenging for him at times, especially as he was obviously gay.

    2. The only two campuses were Prahran and Preston. I think it is the Victorian College for the Deaf. I

  5. I don't enjoy seeing blotchy, multi coloured, multi shaped public murals normally. But this mural is very appealing.

    1. Grumpy old lady Hels, but I do get your point. The mural is rather stylish.

  6. It looks to be someone bent over backwards, but male or female? The hair and face suggests female, but the arm and hand look mannish. It's not the sort of thing I'd stand and look at.

    1. River, I agree about the arms and that is perhaps a problem with the mural unless it is a true representation.

  7. This is artistic. I will go find it there. Bad traffic in Windsor. With regard to Nullawil mural on my post, it is a small town north to Dumosa. One of the oldest silo art in silo art trail in wimmera mallee region. I made a mistake to say it was near Ararat.

    1. Roentare, I can easily find where the town is and I am surprised I don't know of the mural and its location. Traffic all over the inner city is bad. Catch a tram or train.

  8. It's certainly different and obviously it's there for a message of some kind..

  9. I couldn't bend like that if I tried.

  10. At first I thought the young girl was bending forwards, but she's actually bending backwards. Can't figure out what the bottom of the mural is. He always paints in muted shades. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Andrew.

    1. Sami, I can't work out the bottom either. Thanks.

  11. If she's bending backwards, I would guess that it is some exhilerated dance in nature. Otherwise, she's dead and being carried by an unseen figure. One of the two. One or the other. Dead or dancing, we decide.

  12. I really like it. The muted tones seem to fit the emotion of her pose.

    1. Pat, it simply would not have worked in bright colours. Thanks.

  13. It's a good mural -- very realistic and such a strange pose for that wall. Makes you look twice.

    1. Yes Steve, although it is not a head snapping mural.
