Sexism in Politics

I am sorry this is a long read and ignore it if you wish. I think it is very important. 'Liberal Party' in Australia means conservative/Tory/Republican party. The person, Jacinta Allan, is the Premier of the State of Victoria.

Funded by a brothel owner and others, the mobile ad is travelling around Melbourne, where mobile advertising is allowed, and it is just appallingly sexist. Shame, shame, shame. Photo from The Age.

Franco Puleo, who owns Gotham City brothel in South Melbourne, is among the people funding the $105,000 Ditch the Witch advertising campaign.
The campaign is using misogyny to get Jacinta Allan out of power in Victoria.
I've spoken to many SWers who say Puleo is as sexist as this campaign.
Billboards are being ferried across Melbourne with Allan as a witch.
I have it on authority the campaign has the support of the Liberal Party and Liveable Victoria - an organisation focused on planning and other state issues.
The Herald Sun ran a page on the campaign in its print edition and used the slogan in the copy in the same way it uses slogans for its own campaigns. Interestingly, the Herald Sun refused to name the organisation and people behind the campaign. Possibly because the editorial department is firmly focused on securing a Liberal Party win in the state.

The Ditch the Witch campaign reflects the Liberal-aligned Ditch the Witch campaign against Julia Gillard in 2011.

  1. There is absolutely no need for this it is a disgusting . In todays society it seems to be the norm to abuse someone’ or their beliefs in the most cruel and inappropriate way. You may not like Ms Allan , her leadership, policies and the way she is bankrupting the state but that’s why we go to the ballot box . That’s where we express our view of her and other politicans …

  2. Liberal is Republican?? Showing my cluelessness here. Also I know nothing of Jacinta Allan. Those ads should not be allowed.

  3. I find it difficult to believe the Liberal opposition either funds or supports these violent, sexist campaigns. I don't like conservative parties, but I am certain they would not want to be seen as attacking women.

  5. Disbelief here. They can't even run a campaign outlining policies? Descending to a Trumpian level of ad hominem attacks? And of course the misogynists now have permission to have a free for all on her. It's awful but very few countries are exempt from this behaviour. Maple Magas in Canada are saying awful shyte too.

  6. Trump introduced--or maybe reintroduced--shamelessness into politics, and now it's spreading around the globe.

  7. The hatred some politicians attract can seem inexplicable if you are not moving in the circles where they are hated. Mind you, I have a very low opinion of Mr Minns, our own premier in NSW. The difference is that the press all seem to love him. It's just the ALP (except the SDA right) and leftwards of it who can't stand him.

Ms Allan however seems to be on the receiving end of a sustained press campaign. It didn't work against Dan Andrews, but it seems to be working now. They're looking for a reprise of what they did to Gillard. I suspect it is easier to do that to a woman.

Pauline Hanson meanwhile happy to cheer it on with "I was called a witch by Tim Fischer" (though he denied that and if he denied it it obviously could not have been a public campaign like the present one).

  8. Don't like the ad at all, it's rather a dirty one if you know what I mean.
I believe from what I heard and have read she isn't very popular at the moment.

  9. I have never ever voted liberal and likely never will but this is low even for them. Arent they embarrassed?
What kind of leadership does it suggest.
Trump has normalised this kind of behaviour.
    Ugh.
    Ditch the douchey dirtbag dicks

  10. It's bizarrely amusing that the "conservatives" have climbed into bed, so to speak, with a brothel owner! Politics makes strange bedfellows. But yes, it's appalling overall.

  11. That is so offensive. No party should stoop so low.

  12. Its common here too. Instead of a debate on policies disagreed upon, the attack is instead against the person. Signals weakness of the attacker, unable to debate, so they go the easy route and do personal attacks. We watch such things daily with our current pres.

  13. Politics has become so ugly these days, Andrew.

  14. Calling competent women "witches" then executing them in public worked very well in medieval Europe. Perhaps this is a new version of an old anti-woman project.

  15. Yes, the worst element seem very liberated these days. It always takes into decent people a while to believe it and motivate and mobilize. But this dark. Will not last forever in my opinion. Hang in there and of course vote every time!
