River and others participate in Sunday Selections, to use those photos you've never found relevant to a blog post of its own.
Today, Sunday, at 9am my windows will be retinted for reasons that are quite clear in this photo. Three have already been done for various reasons, seven to be done today. On this building is the image of a long ago deceased Aboriginal man, William Barak. There are some places where the image is clearly visible, but as we walked near to the building, it wasn't visible. However, when I pointed my phone camera to the building, I could see the image on the screen, and so could my companions on their screens. Quite weird being visible in the camera screens, but not to the naked eye.
Further along, we walked past an army drill hall, no longer used for that purpose. It had these nice underfloor ventilation openings. What would such vents look like in a modern building? A bit of plastic pushed into a gap, I would guess. Some real thought has gone into this design, repeating along the side of the building.
If I was being common, I would call this the arse end of Arden Station, but I am not, so I will call it the rear entrance, which I didn't know it had when I initially visited. It is the perfect place for a kiss and drop off place, yet the stopping restrictions are quite...restricting, shall I say. Not one car came down the street in the five minutes I spent there looking around
I think this was on the station concourse as I walked towards the lifts. Rather cool, hey.
A new version of our City Square was unveiled above Town Hall Station and it is rather awful. There is lots of seating along the edges of a paved area, which you would think be good but they are exposed to the sun. Don't think these planted gum trees will offer much shade, planted in with lots of weedy looking plants. It is horrible. A weak sun in our winter, spring and autumn might be nice to sit under, but in our summer, no one wants to sit in the sun, and get a dose of strong UV rays and later develop skin cancers. To add to the outrage are these grass trees (black boys), which would have cost thousands for each one. Rejection of foreign deciduous trees that allow winter sunshine through and terrific shade in summer is just crazy. I consider this square of nothingness to be the worst part of Metro Tunnel development.
Never pay retail, and I don't. A new shirt and new shoes, 40% off. Fifty cents for this very sturdy paper bag, with a cardboard base to carry them. It seems such a waste to put it into recycling. I got rid of two other similar bags, along with this one.
I is innocent! Jass likes this new bed, just outside my and the lads' bedrooms.
Was there a Walt Whitman high school in a 70s US tv show? I know Whitman was a writer or a poet. Doyle stayed with him and nursed him, until Walt's death. The inner'net told me so, and therefore it must be true.
I sent two Christmas cards, and obviously I received more than I sent.

She is not innocent. This is the sacrificial toilet roll. While this one sits here and readily available for her to claw and chew, she leaves the rest alone.

Interesting Whitman information - very sweet. A lot of US high schools are named after people rather than where they are which seems strange to our ears.
ReplyDeleteThe grass trees placement is rather baffling - there are groves of them where I grew up, and they were always on a slope and in a mixed vegetation - but then I saw some in a garden recently with their spears, so perhaps we have cracked the code.
Love the decorative grill covers - you raise the same questions that I often ponder.
Good luck with the window washing.
Jeanie, that's interesting about US high schools. Grass trees are very slow growing, hence their cost. But yes, I know they are plentiful in some areas.
DeleteYou got quite an entourage there. The city stroll is something I need to resume a lot more. Summer is often a deterrent away from CBD
ReplyDeleteRoentare, the city is best avoided when it is hot.
DeleteThe only time I buy a card for a birthday, bar mitzvah or wedding is when there is a present involved. Then a card is inserted inside the gift wrapping.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise a card on line is cheaper, faster and just as attractive.
Ah Hels. That is a bit different. Following Ray's tradition, I always send birthday cards by post if I am not going to see the person on the day. I no longer buy gifts.
DeleteVery interesting information about Walt Whitman. The TV show with Walt Whitman High was the excellent Room 222 during the '70's. I loved that show. The main teacher Mr Kaufman went on to play the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. There was a good mix of people and stories.
ReplyDeleteThanks Benny. I had totally forgotten about Room 222. Google is not being helpful. There was a hot black teacher, but he wasn't Mr Kauffman? So long ago...
Delete"Rejection of foreign deciduos trees that allow winter sunshine through and terrific shade in summer is just crazy" I agree 1000% "We are Australian! We MUST have only Australian greenery! they cry, whoever "they" are. So silly.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about your window tinting film bubbling like that. I think you should make enquiries as to the origin and thickness of the product being applied, is it thinner and therefore cheaper (made in China?) and less able to withstand our summer heat? Is the window properly dampened and the film applied with squeegees to smooth and seal it to the window? Ask about the company's reputation, how many complaints have they had? Or not had.
About trees River, we think alike. The tinting is over twenty years old and it began to fail a few years ago. The new tint is being applied by my brother's tenant who lives in the attached flat at the rear of his house. He's lived there for years, and has been window tinting for 45 years. He knows his stuff and the result was good. He retinted five windows for less $'s than I paid for one retint of Phyllis' and Kesav's bedroom soon after Phyllis moved in, by the window company with the Irish O' name.
DeleteBugger, missed a "u" in deciduous.
ReplyDeleteBut not the u in bugger.
DeleteThat building is just cool. Just like the northern light variations are not visible to the naked eye but show up beautifully when photographed.
ReplyDeleteJass and the tp rolls makes me laugh. You can thank your lucky stars she does not go after the hung roll.
There is an amusing video of a man who bought his cat a very expensive catbed/tree thing. He carefully assembled it only to discover his cat had taken up residence in the box and had no interest in the tree.
The one with the face, Debby? Yes, it is. She has gone after hung rolls, mine only once I think, but the lad's many times. They sat the roll atop the cistern, and didn't close the toilet lid, and Jass knocked the whole roll into the water.
DeleteYes, that's what happen with cats. Jass shows some interest in the scratching posts etc, but today found getting deep and down under in old tinting foil. Boxes must always be investigated.
Good photo shots are everywhere when a good photographer is looking. I like this group.
ReplyDeleteThanks Deb. Kind words.
Delete"...such a mix may not happen in rural Australia..."
ReplyDeleteMetropolitan areas tend to induce more diversity, and hopefully more tolerance as well.
Yes Kirk, and that is one huge subject, that I won't ever address directly.
DeleteGood section Andrew. Amazing how the face shows on the camera only, it does look good. Great thinking on the toilet roll, cats have a thing with them sometimes.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret. The image being seen on the camera was amazing.
DeleteI really like the sacrificial toilet roll. And I can't imagine you ever being common🤣
ReplyDeleteNobody cares about beautiful buildings anymore. As my mother would say "their taste is all in their mouth"
Kylie, fortunately in Melbourne now, many buildings are greatly cared for. Some homes built in the 50s and 60s are now protected, deservedly so.
DeleteI make a good pretence at not being common., but I am.
The image on the building appearing and not appearing, may be a light polarization difference. There were many schools named for Walt Whitman, and the id of the TV show above sounds right.
ReplyDeleteTP, it must be something like that with the camera. Is it widely known Whitman was gay?
DeleteI am so glad that you are getting Christmas cards. We used to get them till the late 1990s. We used to have so many of them. I shouldn't blame anyone, because I too haven't sent them to anyone since the late 1990s. Probably, I must renew the practice. Nothing like physical greetings cards and letters.
ReplyDeletePradeep, it is sad that greeting cards are out of favour. It was extra nice if someone had written a small note inside, or at times even non personalised letter about their year.
DeleteIt is good to see the vent covers surviving and looking cared for, Andrew.
ReplyDeletePat, they aren't something that would catch most people's eyes.
DeleteI don't know how in the world such art is created that you can look once and see nothing and look again and there it is, materializes out of nowhere, like a ghost. I like it though, the ghosts image on the building.
ReplyDeleteStrayer, I think it is something that even the most disinterested person would see, from certain angles at least.
DeleteWhitman is a literary hero in the USA and has been for generations. Of course, any discussion of his sexuality was glossed over and avoided for most of that time! But yes, I imagine there are schools named for him among other things.
ReplyDeleteI think the square looks nice. Once the trees grow in a bit it will be more welcoming, I imagine.
Oh, and I love the pic of Jass in her cat bed!
DeleteSteve, you are answering what I just asked TP in my reply to his comment. A literary hero doesn't come by every day. Interesting. Jass loves every photo of herself too. She's that kinda gal.
DeleteWhat an interesting set of Sunday selections. The cat will always claim to be innocent, whether true or not.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mimi. Yes, but seldom is innocent.
DeleteGave up buying cards years ago, now I only use Jacquie Lawson online.
ReplyDeleteI have a photo of that building with Barak!
Ah yes, they do love toilet paper!
And yes, I would have to keep that shopping bag.
Wow Jackie. I didn't realise the building was so old. i wonder about the location where you took the photo.
