Little L's birthday

A couple of Sundays ago we celebrated my great nephew's five year old birthday at his paternal grandfather's small acreage. While some car shuffling happened, I reckon around thirty cars were accommodated for parking, with not a paddock used.

The monster blow up slide thingie was inflated by two air pumps and umpteen children had a fine old time. The food was lovely, set out in an open ended garage. Thankfully there was no music.

I am a firm believer in no alcohol at children birthday parties. Nevertheless when Tradie Brother offered me a tinny, I accepted. Hmm, ABI Brother had a can in his hand too.

I said to ABI Brother a little later, do you realise that we three brothers are the only people here drinking alcohol? He replied, he didn't but agreed with me. Lucky that Sister wasn't there too with a glass of champagne in her hand. What a disgraceful family we are.

Little L is a delight and so sweet to his old great uncle. The piñata went off like a treat, with some kids hitting it softy and some, very hard.

We had only visited his grandfather's small farm twice I think and didn't take too much notice aside from there being a house, a cottage and an inground swimming pool. I took a little look around and it is a beautiful property, and close to a town. You can buy these few acres and all within for about $1.5 million, about an hour's drive from the city, on a good day.

There is a dam of water in the back of the photo.

  1. I don't think one drink is awful. It's not like you're the child's parents.

    1. EC, few of us do EC. I don't think the father has money, just the property that's worth a lot. I know the feeling.

  4. What a lovely party. How splendid it is to be invited and involved in a little one's party. Happy birthday to little L and good fortune for the year ahead.

  5. Five is a lovely age...past the toddler stage and before the truculence starts 😉. How lucky is he to have that beautiful property for his party. I bet they all had so much fun.

    1. JayCee, the kids had a riotous time and there must have been about forty of them, all under ten.

    1. We and now I Boud, were always included in any family event. While at times we didn't want to, ie school concerts, we usually made the effort.

  7. Alcohol and children's parties? Depends on the party. If the party is truly geared towards children, and its mostly children in attendance, the only adults being parents, then, yes, no alcohol. But then there these strange parties where a child's birthday is really just an excuse to throw a party. I've seen such parties thrown for TODDLERS who can't talk and have no idea what a birthday even is. The party may go on long after the child goes to sleep! And of course, there's alcohol. In those cases, it may be best to throw a party for no reason at all then using children as an excuse.

    1. Ah yes Kirk, the huge parties for one year olds. I remember those but there wasn't alcohol involved that I recall. Having the one drink for me was just something to do while watching the kids all play.

  8. You are very wise keeping up family functions.
I saw my first cousins all the time when we were young. But once people went to university or jobs or married, we saw each other only on special events or holidays. Now I barely know their children's names :(

  11. It's always good to have a snoop round - like a security man checking out a property... or indeed a potential burglar!

    1. YP, a few words of appreciation of the property would have killed any suspicion.

  12. Nice party and nice property. Is there public transport nearby? no? $1.5m seems like a decent price for all that. What would the same price buy within the city limits? Here it might get a decent house with a pool and barbecue area but not much garden space.

    1. River, there is a train station about 1.5 km away but it's not a great service. Yes, you could buy a decent house about ten kilometres away from the city, but it wouldn't have much land or extras. A neighbouring apartment on my level sold for $1.3 a couple of years ago. Similar area inside but has a bigger balcony.

What a lovely setting for the celebration, beats McDonald's any day.
