Not Happy Jan

It began Wednesday and stopped by Friday but when it was 38 degrees on Saturday water just poured out of the front of air con. Can you see the buckets? This is not good for a poor old age pensioner and a poor self funded retiree on a fixed income.

An appointment will be arranged for an assessment on Monday. Our first unit was installed in 2002. It failed to needing replacement in 2012. This one has lasted a little longer. We hope it is something simple but we aren't optimistic. This year with barely an autumn and spring when it wasn't used, it has worked hard. But isn't that its raison d'etre? We may have to replace it and that will mean $$$s.

  1. Perhaps you should start up a "Go Fund Me" or "Just Giving" appeal. How ironic that you waxed lyrical about aircon on Friday and now you have this disaster to deal with! Good luck!

  2. Ouch. Expensive. At least air con is one thing we shall never need up here!

  3. If it is still cooling, it should be just a blocked drain.

    1. TP, that's what I am hoping but I've never seen water come out of the drain hose outside.

    2. Push a bottle brush up into it and see if any blockage gets removed. it should drip when in "high" cooling mode. Place a pot plant saucer under it.

  4. There is always something that needs to be replaced or mended. I would like to have a housekeeper whose sole job is to keep everything working and up to date.

  5. Let's hope they don't charge a truck fee. Truck charge is quite common since the pandemic. The plumbing company does the same.

    1. Jackie, truck fee or not, I expect the end price will be the same.

  6. Ouch. I feel for you and hope that the problem is minor and can be fixed on the first visit.

  7. You've said you live in an apartment building. Is this an air con you put in yourself? If it came with the place, I'd think the landlord would fix it.

    1. Yes Kirk. Had this building been built ten years later, air con would have been standard. As new, it was an optional extra here. The building was a couple of years old when we moved in and we quickly had it installed. We own the apartment, so it is our responsibility, but yes, if we rented and it was already installed, it would be the landlord's responsibility.

  8. Reverse ducted is the only way to go….you will get at least 20 years out of it …Mitsubishi. Or Daikin. They also sell one like yours though you will have the same issue unless you get it serviced regularly .i

    1. Anon, if the the air con option was taken when these were sold off the plan, it was ducted. Few of the original units still survive and those that do are very noisy, inside and out. This is our third Daikin split system in thirty years and we like them. We've never had them serviced but we probably should have. I scrub down the outer fins once a year and clean the inside filters about every two months.

  9. For pity's sake, don't write about any other household appliances!

  10. Inside that wall unit there are filters which need to be removed and cleaned on a regular basis, then put back in place. Do you do this? And when it is in cooling mode there should be water coming from the outside drain hose, not a lot but there should be some at least when the unit fan is running on "high". I have a dish under mine and I've seen birds drinking from there in the past which is why I bought a bird bath. Read the instruction book on how to clean the filters. I do mine twice a year, at the end of summer and again at the end of winter.

    1. River, I clean the internal filters about every two months and the fins of the external part once a year. Ours makes more water when heating than when cooling. It hasn't made any during cooling in the outside tray this year. I've never seen water drip from the internal drain hose into the tray.

  11. PS. my unit was installed in 2013, a Fujitsu and I've heard Fujitsu ad Mitsubishi are the best and rarely need servicing.

  12. Oh no. I hope it doesn't break your bank completely to repair such a high cost item or replace.

  13. I have problems with the faucet in the kitchen it makes an awful noise ! My landlord doesn't know anything about keeping a house and gives me the most comical advices because he doesn't want to pay. This time I made a video and send it to him. Now he pays, lol ! It was also an old thing. Better to replace it in time before it breaks down completely and costs even more then.
