The world has a new map, a more realistic map for actually showing the size of various continents, and while I know things in African are big, very big, the continent is much larger than depicted on the old Mercator Map.

DeleteI know all about the revised map and agree that knowledge keeps growing - we have to adapt our knowledge of science, geography, medicine etc.

That's a good point Hels, one I didn't think of, and I can see it in a map of Europe, but really it is only reflecting existing borders.

DeleteTo be fair to the old Mercator Map, I've read some things were purposely exaggerated to give sailors a better idea of where to find various bays and capes and whatnot (though Age of Imperialism biases also played a role.)
ReplyDeleteKirk, the exiting map will be kept for navigation, although that's beyond my understanding as the maps don't reflect reality. Absolutely about Imperialism. All men want things to be bigger.
