I had new venetian blinds installed in the lounge room last Friday. The old ones had a couple of bent slats at the door, one when Mother went out to smoke on the balcony and closed the door on the blinds, and on the other side of the blinds, where I stood up from the lounge chair and fainted and fell against the blinds. I had them cleaned about 18 months ago, and the man said they would not stand up to another sonic clean. They are 28 years old, so they've done ok. An internal part on one important blind broke, which pushed me to get them replaced.
Sadly for the money spent, no one will notice the new blinds, six of them, but I see them and I did it for myself, and for Ray, who would also be pleased.
I had a nice afternoon tea with my friend Bunyip to celebrate her birthday, the afternoon after the blinds were fitted in the morning.
Phyliss and Kosov were out both days at the weekend, socialising with female friends. Sunday I wanted to visit the shops at Port Melbourne, so I took the car, and stopped off at the big green shed hammer shop for a charity barbeque sausage in a slice of bread with fried onions. I did't even go inside the shed. Then for coffee at the Port Melbourne shops and I bought a couple of things.
Car parking at the South Melbourne Central Aldi car park has become difficult on Thursdays, often being full by 10am. It never used to be but it is now. I needed a plan B to reduce my parking stress. Let me try Tuesday. South Melbourne Market is not open either day, so I thought Tuesday would be quieter. It wasn't. Phyllis and Kosov came, well Phyllis drove and we were just lucky and found a space quickly. Soon after the red car park full sign illuminated, instead of showing in green the number of spaces available. I need a plan C.
The barista where I have been buying coffee for quite some time, the one who winked at me a while ago, has left after seven years, wanting to get out of hospitality. I'll miss him and his attractive Italian accent.
I blame Ballarat because about ten days after visiting, my car displayed a map of all four wheels with tyre pressures and one was low on air, 27 whatever. It should be 34. Phyllis and Kosov were with me and I showed them how to pump up a tyre at a service station, a servo as it is called here. Two weeks later it had lost air again and Phyllis pumped it up this time at the servo. Yesterday I took it for repair and I waited an hour for the repair in a nice air conditioned waiting room while it was 34/93 outside, with free coffee and cold drinks. A small piece of steel was pulled from the tyre and I guess the hole was then plugged. How much did this cost? No charge. When I need new tyres, that is where I will go. Nice work Bob Jane T-Marts in Port Melbourne.
How do my old lounge chairs look? Ok for a struggling person? They are a bit saggy in the seats, but still look reasonable. There are swing out footrests and the backs recline. Phyllis put them on FB Market Place, for free. I called a charity shop and they weren't interested, even though they welcome furniture. I put them on my FB for free. No one wants them. Phyllis and Kosov said they could carry them, and picked them up to check.
So they will go in the hard rubbish collection when the next happens. This Friday, the new lounge chairs will be delivered. There is space for the old ones to stay until the rubbish collection. I've spent so much on my home over the last year or so, and much of it not really visible, but the new chair assembly will be noticeable, I hope in a good way.
I haven't checked this post, so it is just raw.

Homes are expensive, not just houses, but the apartments we live in too. Looking forward to seeing your new chairs.
ReplyDeleteI think charities don't want those recliner type chairs because they're so heavy, with the metal inside them.
Pixie, I didn't think of that, and I expect you are right.
DeleteOur homes are often our safe havens so spending your money on making yours a comfortable and pleasing environment is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing photos of your new chairs.
JayCee, I have no desire to spend money on international travel, so I am happy to attack the backlog of maintenance etc that were there.
DeleteNo one wanted your lounge chairs? Kind of surprising. We do hate to put things out as rubbish. Even for small items I prefer someone take them for free. I am a senior now. Some young people I know move and give away all their old furniture instead of moving it. Yes, homes are costly to maintain. My new roof in 2023 was shockingly expensive.
ReplyDeleteTerra, I will guess once they are put out on the street for collection, someone will take them. The waste that comes from people here when they move, is astonishing. It is a curious thing how your rooves have to be replaced often.
DeleteYou'd need a small truck for the chairs, people wanting free may not have the means to move them.
ReplyDeleteThat is actually what I came here to say. I cannot imagine the chairs not being claimed for any other reason.
DeleteAussiebel, you are quite correct about moving them.
DeleteTrue, Debby.
DeleteYour post looks perfect to me. ~nods~ I need to stop endlessly editing stuff, including my comments (!), which I just did. lol Folks drive through our neighborhood every garbage pickup day and take all kinds of weird items. It makes me glad to see things repurposed. And I am sure Ray is smiling upon you even more than usual for having new blinds installed. Hugs, my dear.
ReplyDeleteThanks Darla. At some point you have to let go of editing. I do try to write decently but I tend to go for more quantity than quality.
DeleteIt's hard to give away upholstered furniture, I think. People are terrified of bedbugs. I hate throwing things like that away too, but sometimes it just has to be done.
ReplyDeleteSteve, I don't think concern about bedbugs applies here. I've of them rarely and then only in backpacker hostels. I'm sure someone will tiak ethem when they are out on the street.
DeleteIf no one wants them for nothing then be gone ! We put an old one out for hard rubbish one day and a neighbour up the street took it! Charity shops are quite fussy these days only seem to take clothes and particular household goods. Then charge too much for them.
ReplyDeleteCouncils in Adelaide have a old mattress pick up service as well
My local council collects mattresses for recycling too. The logistics for charities must be difficult.
DeleteI think it is important to make your home as comfortable and pleasing for you in retirement. As I continue to spend more and more time at home I appreciate the new furniture and paintings I bought when I retired.
ReplyDeleteJ, that's is what is happening to me. I go out every day still but not in such an adventurous manner. At night I just prefer to stay at home.
DeleteYour life is more eventful than mine now
ReplyDeleteRoentare, busier than I like at times. Last Friday I looked at the calendar with this week blank. Three things were added.
DeleteWe don't have verge collections any more so all that fun is gone , not to mention the recycling that goes on.. someone's trash is someone else's treasure. You can arrange a personal pickup of junk but I don't have enough to bother. If I want to chuck something I throw it in the nearest skip. So non collections encourages people to do this.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the chairs will disappear once out on the street. I really don't want to pay.
Delete"Sadly for the money spent, no one will notice the new blinds, six of them, but I see them and I did it for myself, and for Ray, who would also be pleased." Gosh this resonated with me! I too have been taking command of my apartment. In preparation for lunar New Year. I even did a nice cleaning yesterday including some things I rarely touch and I should know better having grown up in the cleaning business. Sorry Dad don't fire me. Took my car my Subaru in for its oil change and one year work up. I love that car. It is a Crosstrek and is just so comfortable and capable. My first modern car I did not have the navigation and the integration with my phone and all of that before. In fact, for most of our time my husband and I primarily traveled on our motorcycles, although we did have a pickup truck as is required for bikies as they age especially.. The strange thing is happening and I am feeling more capable everyday. Although the anticipatory grief can be killer sometimes. I had a date every night for 40 years but truth to tell I'm enjoying sitting quietly in my private space. Carry on Andrew
ReplyDeleteCloudia thanks for the update on your life. The husband of my friend and neighbour is in care with dementia. He is quite a distance away and he no longer recognises her, so she doesn't visit him, well rarely. It is like she is a widow, just not officially.
Delete28 years! My blinds start giving out by year 10.
ReplyDeleteKirk, when we moved here we used to close blinds at night but then we decided there was little point as no one could see in, and so only closed one blind against the morning sun in the morning. So, if you don't use them, they tend to last.
DeleteThe lounge chairs looked perfect to collapse into, once the legs run out of energy. Being able to raise the legs is even better. Only the sides are too bulky.
ReplyDeleteHels, the wide arms are perfect for a glass of a beverage to sit upon, along with a cat.
DeleteI tried to sell my parents lounge suite for $50 and got no takers then decided to put it on marketplace for free in the week before hard waste collection. I still didnt give it away but got two enquiries after the rubbish truck collected it. Life can be weird.
ReplyDeleteMy son once brought home bed bugs, probably from a student share house but we were never sure.
Kylie
DeletePart of the problem is that you are not permitted to put out hard rubbish items until the last minute, so the chance of them being spotted and retrieved is slim. In our disposable society it is easier just to throw things out than allow the time and space for them to find a new user.
Kylie, maybe bedbugs don't like a colder climate as much.
DeleteIt's the same here MC. We don't get notified of a collection until the day before collection. Too bad if you miss the lift notice, but we now have a Whatsapp group and a message is sent through there.
DeleteYour venetian blinds were of excellent quality to last 28 years ! Don't worry that the "new" is not visible, in the worst case you can put a label on the object "New" ! Has Jass got a new bed too ? We have 7°C which is quite warm for February, but I wished I had in the 30° !
ReplyDeleteIngrid, maybe because they are altered much. Jass did get a new bed but she only used it a few times and stopped. It may be too warm for her and I'll bring it out again in the winter. It was 25 here today, and that's about my limit of heat.
DeleteBe comfortable in your home, it is your nest, keep it well.
ReplyDeleteI have convinced myself of that, TP.
DeleteOur back deck/verandah already sports a leather recliner (not as nice as yours) which somebody gave us when they were moving to a place which was too small to fit it. We actually hired a ute to pick it up AND helped them with the ute to move other items. It now mostly serves as a repository for other back-verandah junk and must be headed for the street soon.
ReplyDeleteOur living room is crowded out by a nicer recliner (the Norwegian brand) which my father treated himself to about 6 weeks before he died. Tbh it is little-used and when the crunch comes I will probably prefer to retain two smaller 50s armchairs which also came from my parents.
MC, 50s armchairs can be very comfortable. Look after them well.
DeleteOh I would take both those chairs in a heartbeat. My only chair, a recliner something like those, is beat up and the foot rest broke in two, inside its covering. I would have been one happy soul to get those two chairs.
ReplyDeleteYou would be most welcome to them Strayer. I'd even carry them on my back to deliver them.
DeleteIt's nice to have new things so long as they give you pleasure.
ReplyDeleteJB, from when my mother died, it took a year for her money to come through. Ray and I knew we had a backlog of things to address, but sadly he wasn't here to participate. At least I got my own way about everything, and I've not really got anything too wrong.
DeleteI'm surprised no one grabbed your lounge chairs. Do you have a paper or on-line paper that lists free items at no charge? I can't help thinking someone would scarf those up.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new ones and the blinds.
Sandra, Phyllis put them on a free online site, but no bites. I will guess they will disappear from the street before they are collected.
DeleteThose chairs look good so it is too bad that no one wants to take them.Maybe someone will grab them when the lads take them downstairs, Andrew.
ReplyDeletePat,that is what I hope. Some really good things go out in the pile for collection.
DeleteUpkeep is expensive as I well know having lived in purchased homes for close on 55 years. I love my rental now. Call the superintendent and the stuffs are fixed. Free. It does sound like you are finished with the outlays for a while though.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
WWW, there is certainly less to spend here in an apartment than in a house but of course there is the quarterly maintenance fees.
DeleteI wouldn't want those chairs, they are boxy and ugly to my eyes. I'm sure the new venetians are lovely though and well worth the investment. I had the same "nobody wants that'' with my old tv cabinet, wood (veneer) and huge. Couldn't even give it to the Salvos, they said no one wants old fashioned styles like that and they'd be stuck with it. It's gathering dust in son-in-law's bigger storage unit now.
ReplyDeleteRiver, I've forgotten what the new ones will look like now. I know they are not quite as boxy. I can visualise an oak tv cabinet and a pine one, but not a veneer. At least it's not your problem now.
DeleteI can' be sure it is veneer, thinking back it was bought from a "white wood" furniture company and cost quite a bit, so perhaps it is proper wood, but still not wanted by anyone as it takes up a lot of space.
DeleteYou see to have found lots of energy of late to deal with the refurbishment. Good for you.
ReplyDeleteWell Fun60, I do quite a bit of procrastinating, all the same.
DeleteI always get stressed over parking. That's a major problem in most Indian big cities. Quite possibly in many other big cities in the world as well. So, when I am heading out to some place, my first thought is will I get a place to park. So, very often, I end up taken Uber.
ReplyDeleteI understand Pradeep. Mostly I use public transport, which is fine but for the weekly shop, I need the car.
DeleteGuaranteed once hard rubbish collection happens they will be picked up for free for those who trawl the footpaths for bargains rather than marketplace. I put up a lot of things for free when we were decluttering for the sale and ended up paying over $250 for someone to take them to the tip.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, in olden days when rubbish sat on the street for a week, that certainly happened, but now only being allowed to put it out the night before collection only gives a small window for scavengers.
DeleteIt's a shame no one wanted the chairs. We had 2 that were similar but made of different fabric, we ended up selling them here for a good price.
ReplyDeleteAmy, black leather may have a limited appeal too.
