Guard the Leaf

It is not an official kind of boycott, but Canadians are boycotting the United States. Most provinces have cleared US liquor from their outlets. Buy local Canadian products is huge.

The numbers of Canadians visiting the US has dropped dramatically. They are avoiding flights to anywhere that travels via a US airport.

So called Snowbirders, Canadians who travel to Florida and other warm locations during the Canadian winter for a month or three are not doing so this year. Some of those who own holiday property in Florida are selling for what they can get.

Instead the Canadian Snowbirders are travelling to warm countries where they feel welcome, such as Mexico, Spain, Portugal and Asian countries. They don't have to deal with the grumpy US border force, and from my experience they are very grumpy and unfriendly. They don't want to risk having their phones and social media examined by Border Force to see if they made negative comments about #47.

Why do Canadians have a hate on the US? It began with #47 saying Canada should become the 51st state of the US. Then there were increased tariffs on goods imported from Canada. Canada and the US were the closest of friends and allies but #47 has ruined the relationship.

The Canadian dollars that normally bleed into the US just aren't happening, especially affecting the northern US states, and as I mentioned, Florida, along with Las Vegas too.

While I don't intend visiting the US, I can confidently say, in the present climate, I would not. The very thought of someone going through my phone is horrendous. It can happen in Australia, but there would have to be very good suspicions for our Border Force to access our phones. The idea of being rounded up by ICE, Immigration and Custom Enforcement, as a visitor is remote, but it's happened. People who were born in the US and are US citizens have been rounded up. But I don't have black or brown skin, so maybe I would be safe from ICE.

The loss of millions of Canadian dollars into the US is hard to conceive. It will be felt for a very long time. Meanwhile, Canadians are holidaying locally or in other countries. They are not crossing the border to the US for cheap shopping, quite the reverse now.

But like my attitude, people in other countries are not visiting the US. Visitors to the US from Europe and Scandinavia have dropped too.

At times I watch the YouTuber, Guard the Leaf, that is the maple leaf, a symbol of Canada. He documents statistics, interviews of people talking about the matter and is very pro Canada and anti US following the actions of #47. His trigger was #47 saying Canada should become the 51st state of the US. He seems to find enough to post daily about what is happening between the two countries, and it is certainly not good for the US. If you care to watch this clip, you can observe his passion and anger.

In a country of 350 million, 154 million voted in the 2024 election, 77+ million for #47. He feels bad for those who did not vote for #47 but they are collateral damage. It is all about Canada, its sovereignty, the insults by #47 and his sycophants and the MAGA movement.

  1. I love NYC and went regularly, but I will not enter the USA while the republicans are in power. This year after many decades I went to the UK instead and just loved it. Now I plan for Europe and Asia trips over the next few years.

  2. I'm super close to the Canadian border. around 25 miles. I notice there is a less Canadian plate. Quite a few people at one time flew the American flag with the Canadian one. Since Trump and Idaho is really Pro Dumb Shit ( I didn't want to help my self, so I delibly insult our President) that some feels different about Canadian. I do wonder how much it has effected in our local economy.

  3. The guards at the border now check your Facebook entries for the last six months before entry is allowed. So I would be careful what you write, should you ever change your mind about visiting in the future.

  4. If I didn't live here I wouldn't come to visit either. I see some small signs that a showdown is coming and the fat felon will be toppled but who knows. Not me.

  5. Instead of Make America Great, this administration is more like Make America Hated.

  6. I can't understand what Trump hopes to achieve with that kind of talk. He can't really believe Canada wants to be a state, or that there's any way to compel Canada to become a state. It's all posturing, just Trump flapping his useless gums to distract us from the things he CAN control or address but is choosing not to.

  7. Trump wanting Canada to be a state of the US is just like Putin wanting Ukraine to be part of Russia and I hope neither of those happens. I'm not too worried about Canada, they can stand strong, but I do still worry about Ukraine.
Aside from all the ICE and other border wrong-doings, I would NEVER go to the US, main reason? Random drive-by shootings, I don't want to step out of the airport and get killed. it may never happen, but if I never go there FOR SURE it WON'T happen. Second reason? I'm "white" that is Caucasian, but my skin is light olive and tans easily and quickly. Even mid winter I am not "white". I don't want to be rounded up as an "unwanted" and sent to one of their "concentration camps".

  8. We had studied in history about conquests. Nothing much has changed. They are still on in one form or the other. Now, if not Canada, there is a lot of activity now on the Greeland front.

  9. Interestingly, New Zealand is specifically mentioned as a possible "State" in the Australian Constitution. And could be "added" so long as NZ agrees, and there would be no need for a referendum in Australia.

    1. I heard that James, most interesting. But we don't want them and they don't want us. We are just sisters together in a remote part of the world.

  10. The Orange One will never publicly recognise the harm his policies are doing and he won't suffer. The rich get richer and the poor become poorer and that's how revolutions begin.

  11. I am horrified that our nation has come to this. His latest announcement that he will unite with Netanyahu to fight Iran. We're bombing boats in the Caribbean. Taking Canada, taking Greenland. WTF is wrong with him. There is little we can do except protest and vote. I do think the most powerful weapon in our arsenal is how we do or don't spend our money. Did you hear that Jim Beam whisky is shutting down their distilleries for all of 2026? They have lost their overseas market. When the rich begin to feel the pinch, things will begin to change. Unfortunately, the poor are already struggling. We are headed out early this morning to deliver some groceries and shampoo to a young mother who needs to get through the next 2 days. Heartbreaking.

    1. One thing I do rally admire in the US Debby, is the kind of things you and many others do to help the less fortunate, but in the richest country in the world, it should not be like that. Support for the poorest and less fortunate should come from the federal government.

  12. Even here in our tiny community, people are boycotting US imported products. For example, we used to regularly buy sweet potatoes that always came from America but have now stopped. If the supermarkets have Egyptian grown sweet potatoes we buy those instead now.

  14. I can confirm that a lot of Canadians are upset with trump and his minions. I refused to travel to the US during his last term and will not go this term either. We were supposed to take Jack to Disneyland but that's not going to happen now. I check when I'm buying and try to buy Canadian when I can, but it's not always possible. Sadly there is a fringe in Alberta that want to become the 51st state. WTF!

  15. I have a T-shirt with a big red leaf that reads, "Sorry Canada, We Hate Him Too." We are not all evil, racists.

  16. It would be crazy as a foreigner to subject oneself to border questioning and intrusion and the possibility of detention without reason. I don't know what's become of us here. I'm just trying to survive and get cats fixed.

  17. We didn't travel to the States during his first term. We did go in Jan and Feb this year, but that was booked earlier (during Biden) with the assumption that he would never win again! When he announced his tariffs and I was fit to be tied and ready to come home. However, accommodations had been booked etc. Once home, we consciously don't buy American products and will not step back into that country!
We have American friends who are beside themselves, feeling stuck and powerless watching it fall apart. I follow some bloggers who have created exit plans and are executing them, fleeing to other countries.

  18. I wouldn't want to visit the States either while #47 is there, just too scary!!
