Along with Sami and others, here is my mural effort this week.
I don't know how the residents of these public housing units were rehoused but I hope they were locally and at a similar rental price. Most will pay a subsidised percentage of their government pension income.
Afront of the three blocks were murals, and I've shown some before, dog and cats. I don't think I've shown these. They were simple and nice, and welcoming to the residents, and look pretty good to passers by.
The housing units have now all been demolished and the murals gone.

I hope the displaced residents have attractive murals at their new homes. Those were very cheerful.
ReplyDeleteThey look like the pictures on the stamps
ReplyDeleteI really like those murals and share the hope that the new accommodation is similarly decorated. Such cheery sights.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember these public housing blocks being allowed/encouraged to have murals in front of the ground floor. Was this in Melbourne?
ReplyDeleteHels, they were in Dorcas and Coventry Streets, South Melbourne.
DeleteSimple is nice Andrew. I wish some vocalists would realize that and just sing the song... Aloha
ReplyDeleteThese are really beautiful, Andrew! I love all of them.
ReplyDeleteI wish they could have somehow saved those murals.
ReplyDeleteKirk, they seem to have been on some kind of board, so maybe they will be saved.
DeleteSo many beautiful things here
ReplyDeleteYour mural this week looks so welcoming and kind. Sad that the housing units and murals are gone, but I’m glad they brought beauty and warmth to the area while they were there.
Hope the murals will reappear somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThe murals are excellent but I hope what gets built in place of those homes is more homes, replacement homes for the housing tenants.
ReplyDeleteThe are nice and simple, shame they have gone.
ReplyDeleteThose murals are so bright and pretty and would cheer up any passersby.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity they have been demolished, they were so pretty. I love the dogs :) Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Andrew
ReplyDeleteI group I am a part of us focussing on the need for income based housing for older adults this year.
ReplyDeleteI wonder who created them? I love the idea that attention was given to aesthetics. Here, the housing is a grim place. Bedbugs. Authoritarian oversight and rules which are not applied with an even hand. Internet service is very poor there. A communications company wanted to replace existing cables. Despite the need (think pandemic and closed schools, and kids who needed access to internet) the powers that be made the decision to deny the request because the did not want the grounds dug up.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing you recorded them for posterity! Unsurprisingly, my favorite is the dogs.
ReplyDeleteThese were quite well done. Too bad they are gone, Andrew.
ReplyDeleteGentrification is everywhere. Love those murals, so hopeful. But trashed, of course.
