Christmas Eve

Jackie in Toronto asked me if I had taken Christmas photos around town. I'd taken a couple but it was a bit hard to be enthusiastic about it for some reason.

Still the paperwork comes and has to be dealt with. I had spent a total of 45 minutes in two calls to our motoring organisation and an hour with my bank in person, partly to do with the task in hand, to sort changing the car insurance into my name from Ray's.  I did not want to lose the benefits of his Gold level and the savings that would make. It was another twenty minutes on the phone yesterday and I was becoming concerned. I thought by starting the process in early December, it would be done by when the car insurance was due today. No!

Although there is a two week grace period after expiry, the bank back office does not return to work until the 6th of January, so still the estate account wouldn't be set up until after then. This also needed to be set up to get the mysterious $500 in Ray's bank account. I cleaned it out but I guess it was a last social security payment. On advice I visited the office of the insurer in the city yesterday after the phone call and it was all sorted out in twenty minutes. Online, on phone or in person. There is no way to know which is best, but I think in person seems to work quite well, if there is a person in an office to see.

A few days ago, "Kosov, come. We are going to town to take photos and I will buy you lunch."

"Yes, Andrewwww".

Royal Arcade. It is a case of a camera not really capturing the scene very well. It looked nice.

At QV. I suppose it is Christmas like

As we left the tram.

Looking downstream to the Evan Walker Bridge.

The Christmas tree in Federation Square, followed by more photos at Fed Square.

Outside Melbourne Town Hall.

Steep hill.

"Andrewwww, you missed a photo opportunity."

"Andrewwww, I know of another thing. It's the street with trams."
"That narrows it down a little bit Kosov."
Eventually I worked out he meant the Bourke Street Mall.

Australian style Christmas flowers from Ray's three sisters were delivered.

Our building's Christmas tree in the entrance foyer.

I rid the place of boxes of Christmas decorations, including the Christmas trees. Yes, more than one. I had no intention of doing any decoration. But, I ended up deciding a little tinsel would be nice, along with a few Christmas ornament.

I ain't no style queen. My first Christmas alone is ok. I will do better next year. I feel guilty about not making more of an effort for the younguns, just giving cash.

  1. You're doing so well, Andrew. We've just discovered one of our old friends died in the summer, so his widow is facing her first Christmas without him. So hard, always, no matter how long or short you've been together.

  2. Your minimalist decorations look good - and are more than I have managed. Happy Christmas Andrew. And a better New Year.

  6. Your outing with Kosov sounds like a lovely way to break away from the stress and enjoy some creative photography. I enjoy some of the stuff I missed the other night in city. Have a good Christmas

  8. What a lovely city we live in. The Royal Arcade has always looked impressive, ever since it was built in the late 1860s. But are there no little tables and chairs for coffees?

  10. Melbourne looks Christmassy and I'm glad Kosov went with you, he seems good company.
I've made very little effort for Christmas this year, even my own children will receive cash. And cherries, a box of cherries for every household

  12. They have grassed the pavement outside the Town Hall?
Great photos and I love Kosov's description of Bourke St Mall. If he'd said trams and no cars you might have had a clue.
I am so glad you have Kosov and Phyllis in your life to make these hard occasions a bit easier.

  14. Your bit of tinsel is look alright. Yes, a different Christmas for you this year. Take care. The photos are nice and we don't have many decorations in our city at all, just the Christmas tree in the city.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  15. Your Federation Square tree looks as exciting as our Victoria Square tree. so blah! I was in town today and Rundle Mall is decorated, but the rest of the city is just like it always is. I didn't go into the Adelaide Arcade which is probably beautifully decorated because the city was so very crowded and after my purchasing I just wanted to get out and go home.
    You home decorations are lovely.

  18. In human services - like insurance - the hardest thing to get rid of or put off until later, is a breathing person standing in front of you. Emails and phone calls are much easier to dispose of.

    Merry Christmas!

  19. Yes, in person is always good, but as you said often that's not an option because there is no office to visit. Which some of these big companies like, both for cost-cutting purposes and to make it hard for customers to interact. Anyway, good for you for getting it sorted out, and taking holiday photos to boot! Christmas in Australia looks a little like Christmas in Florida -- a bit incongruous with all those palm trees in the background.

  20. Ha ! the car ! Imagine I had everything finally on my name and thought it was all done, two years later they accused me that the license plate was still on Rick's name ! Error of the insurance company ! but I had to go to the police as if had stolen my own car ! Finally in 3 days I got a new number, no fine no nothing, they recognized that it was their fault !
It's strange to me to see Christmas trees and people in T- shirts !!

  23. Beautiful sunny Christmas! Of course. We are having Sunny Christmas in Hawaii as well but it is a winter sign and natives know the difference. Nevertheless, nothing to complain about! Wishing you the best, Andrew aloha
