Oh no! Not an Allen key.

To put it frankly, my desk chair is buggered. It has only lasted a few year. It had a weight limit of 100kg and Ray at around 90kg and dropping down into the chair probably did some damage. The desk chair that proceeded it was high quality and lasted around 25 years.

While my furniture may be old and dated, it is all in a good condition. I have looked but I can't find anything that would be a good replacement. I did really need to do something about the disintegrating chair.

I had done some online and physical visiting to inspect chairs. I made a decision, for better or worse. A nice young man carried the chair to my car and helped me load it, and the new mat. Balanced on top, I used the shopping jeep to get it up from our garage, and then disassembled all the packages.

I was getting worried as I had not seen any instructions for assembly, but here they were in the last part I unpacked. The instructions were very clear and the only hard part was the final step, putting the back in place. Advice would be, keep the seat screws loose so you have some give when getting the back into the correct place to be screwed in.

My new Stirling chair is very comfortable and with an eight year warranty, I am sure it will give sterling service for many years. The instructions advised me to check in one month's time for a loose screw. No one wants a loose screw.

Phyllis tried the new chair and then the old one and proclaimed he preferred the old one. Dipshit! While within a week when I am about to become an old age pensioner (birthday gifts are welcome if they are shockingly expensive), I am pleased I can still do an Allen key assembly. I kinda missed the arguing that used to happen when Ray and I used to assemble something.

  1. Fancy chair ... Carlos and I bicker the most when we're putting something together,

  2. I hope the new chair is comfortable and gives good service. It's important to be comfortable.

    1. It is comfortable JB and I am not blaming my stronger neck pain today on the chair. I think the chair will see me out, but then I've said that about cars before and they didn't.

    1. Deb, yes, some would suggest I spend too much time sitting on the chair but it is rare that it is for more than fifteen minutes at a time.

  4. Such a smart chair. I do hope you don't spill any curry sauce on that chic grey upholstery, you (not yet retirement age) young whippersnapper.

    1. JayCee, yes, no more eating anything potentially messy when on the chair. Fabric is less forgiving than plastic.

  5. It is looking good. We argue about assembly too. And recently had several arguments about the installation of a printer. The instructions (on line and paper version) were woeful and it was NOT an intuitive process.
    Happy Birthday in advance.

    1. EC, I remember battling against every printer we've ever had, maybe half a dozen or more. While the printers are vastly superior to what was around in the 1990s, why can't they just be plug in and they work? By arse or class, we always succeeded.

    2. My printers plug in and work, I attach the usb cord to the laptop which recognises a new device and asks me "do I trust this device?" I click on yes and it's good to go.

  6. My chair is pretty worn out too. It takes a great effort to assemble these furnitures these days

    1. Get a new one, Roentare. For you, it would be tax deductible, I'm sure.

    1. Pixie, the sticker shock was strong, but I am so pleased I bought it. It looks and feels like it is well made, unlike our last one.

  9. I hope you have already applied for the OAP - it can take months to be processed. You could advertise yourself as a putter together of chairs for a small sum in the meantime.

    1. Merlot, I did in August, using a third party who I have to pay. Apart from one visit to Centrelink, it has been painless. Two weeks after my birthday I will receive my first payment and at some point, hopefully earlier, I will receive the concession card. That's what I really to get my hands on.

    1. Darla, yes bickering is what we did frequently about many things. I never took it seriously although Ray did at times.

I would never try to put the chair together myself, but you don't have a skilled grandchild. Are there no shops that sell the chairs fully assembled?

    1. Hels, I suppose there are stores that sell assembled chairs, but they certainly won't fit in a car boot, so would have to be delivered.

  12. I hope this new chair works out. My office chair has a tendency to sink on me, and I'm constantly cranking it back up.

    2. Hmm, sinking chairs seems to be a thing. Make sure they are not leaking a fluid onto the floor.

  14. I wonder...I've been advised of a loose screw or two in my day. Perhaps I should look around the house for an Allen wrench.

Your chair is very nice. I got a new chair for Christmas. Sadly, it hasn't held up. Looks like I'll need to ask for another.

    1. Debby, that is bad about your chair, ten months. It seems you just have to pay a decent amount to get a good chair.

    2. This time, following your example, I am going to get a fabric chair. It was shocking how quickly this chair went 'bad'.

  15. That's a fine looking chair. Ikea? What brand was the old one that lasted 25 years? I need a new chair too. I bought one able to carry 100kg for many hours at a time, but after only a short while there was a cracking sound and now the seat dips forward and to the left so I am sitting lopsided all day.

    1. River, I've no idea of the name of the old one that lasted so long. We bought it from an office supply shop, along with the three drawer filing cabinet in about 1993. ? This new one came from the big blue shed. I think Ray may have been close to 100kg at some point. This chair is 150kg limited. You probably should have taken yours back to the store and asked for a replacement, but wrestling an office chair onto a bus, well.

For me it was hard to get used to a new chair for the computer desk, though I do now use my laptop.
    Enjoy.

    1. I think so Pradeep. Before Ray died we had discussed that we needed to stop always going for cheap, especially for travel, but not only that.

  18. Like the look of the new chair particularly as it appears to be fabric and not leather (black plastic more likely these days).
I tend to get a sinking feeling when I sit on ours - it’s almost impossible to work with my chin resting on the desk

    1. Cathy, it is fabric. Our last chair with plastic did not last at all. You are another one with a sinking chair. That makes three.

Late night shenanigans

Hey, it wasn't me riding the chair in the car park, but alcohol was involved.  I had been to the building's Christmas gathering barb...
