A hexabition

Tolarno Gallery sounds a bit posh, but I can pretend to be posh and visit. I put on my best singlet (English word, vest). shorts and flip-flops and walked a distance to get there. But there was no need to dress up as I was the only person there to visit these bright sculptures.

I quote Tolarno, 'The gallery spotlights cutting edge contemporary art in a variety of media'.

Well, the works were bright and pretty and not a total waste of my time. But is it art?

  1. My dad used to make things just like that for parties, by twisting balloons.

    1. Yes Sandra. Whether it is art is up to those viewing it. (note, I did not use the cliché, 'in the eye of the beholder').

  3. They are certainly bright. They make me smile, but I do have problems with a lot of contemporary art. Is it art? I don't know but am glad to see it.

    1. This I do consider art, EC. A lot of work and I think perhaps money has successfully been expended. The way the light came in the windows lit the works so well.

  4. Art? I'm not sure how art can be defined. Perhaps if it makes us look and get out of our heads for a moment it is art.

    1. Deb, I judge public street art like that. If I stop and look, it is successful art. I had seen photos online of the this exhibition so I pretty well had seen it, but I wanted to see in person.

    1. Some do Roentare. Are they of interest to you? I have two and perhaps need a medical examination.

  9. Sometimes you need the artist's explanation to help understand their thinking behind the installations. Although even with an explanation I don't always get it.

    1. Fun60, I love having art explained to me. In Australia we had Betty Churcher to explain art to us, along with your? Sister Wendy.

  10. I'd say it's art, it was created, and we can draw whatever we would like to think they are - lovely and bright.

  12. I would say his creative use of bright colours is artful. The word Art does cover a very broad range of objects and styles.

    1. Yes River, I suppose pretty well anything can be art. Although I have seen a few things that I just can't see as art, even after an explanation.

  13. They look like strange figures with big feet. Very colourful.

    1. JB, a classic case of me not studying my own photos. The feet are huge, and every sculpture has them.

  14. I'd call it art. It would make great public art for people to stroll around and kids to climb on

    1. I agree Kylie. They would be better in a public space and how good would be it be to see kids climbing all over them.

  15. Tolarno Gallery opened after I was already at university, but my parents still took us to see the European and Australian Modern art. Then they paid for our espresso at Leo's opposite. :)
I haven't been to Tolarno for yonks.

    1. Hels, you speak of the old one in Fitzroy Street that is no longer. I think Leo's is still there. This Tolarno Gallery is in Exhibition Street.

  16. Well I would not have them in my house, or even garden but they are colourful in a public setting.

    1. Thelma (Thel? Thelly?) they would be great in a public space, assuming they are weather resistant.

  17. I agree with the comment that suggested the structures would be good for kids to clamber on. I love the bright colours.
