The Boarder Report

So far, so good. He is a nice and polite guy. I don't find him sexually attractive, so that is also good, and lordy, I doubt he would find me so at my age.

I was strongly advised by various people to not let him move in until after my weekend away in Torquay, but he was desperate. I am an old gay man. I've done the lot and been around. I've known so many people from so many countries. My instinct was correct. Nothing bad happened.

He bought an electric rice cooker and I don't want anything more on the kitchen benches. He found space in the linen press cupboard where rarely used appliances are stored. He cooks and then cleans up. Thrice he has left curries for me to eat, but the third was too hot to enjoy.

We have chats at times but he is away a lot during the day, working, studying and socialising. All care and no responsibility.

What I did see was a huge spike in electric consumption while I was away. I could tell he had used the oven, and that will crank up the bill but I reckon heating, although he seems to like his room on the cooler side. I can't imagine being away in the near future, so that is a one off. I offered him a low power usage plug in heater for his bedroom, as he likes his door closed and so doesn't receive the normal apartment heat, but he decline and said he like the cool.

For the first two nights his friend, with my permission, stayed with him. While I offered the spare room to the friend if he could make up the bed, he declined and they slept in the same bad...just as friends. Whatever, the friend was very easy on the eyes and he sent me a message a few days later thanking me for allowing him to stay.

Yesterday I attended a clinic where my head wound dressing was removed and the skin graft had taken nicely. I just need to apply paraffin to the edges of the skin. What? Kerosene or something like that? A nurse (I trust nurses more than doctors with after care advice) said, 'Don't worry about it. I'll give you a tube of ointment to use', and she did. My thigh from where the skin was taken is still sore, and after the bandaging was ripped off (ouch), it look red raw and nasty, but everyone seemed happy with the progress. I'll be back there next week for more attention, but until then, I still can't shower.

May I add that all my procedures, two colonoscopies, two melanoma surgeries eighteen months apart,    have been under our national health care system and cost me nothing at the point of use, and were generally done in a timely manner. I do hear stories of horrendous waits for things like hip and knee replacements, but gosh, the system works well for me. Because of various reasons my hernia surgery has been delayed after a scan where something else was discovered. Yesterday I received a pre surgery appointment, and as Deb pointed out today quite eloquently, I will be answering the same old questions, but I will be given a bit more information.

In the afternoon I went in to town to see a daffodil flower display. I love that the heads of you northern hemisphere types are momentarily confused. I just saw on the tv news there were 26,000 daffodils. They are for sale in a plain vase and will raise 2.6 million dollars for charities. The daffs were selling like hotcakes and must be adorning desks all over Melbourne City.

The Boarder says he says hello to Ray Bear each morning.

He arranges his muesli bars nicely. I've slowly been advising him about the best way to live here. He takes notice.

He threw this jar and decorated it with a copy of a similar jar. He gave it to me. How sweet.

He has a little collection of cars and wanted to display them somewhere. I suggested this shelf near the front door where they will be seen. He fiddles with them and adjusts their positions at times.

    1. Pixie, he is certainly in my kitchen space but then I am rarely. He mostly sticks to his bedroom, and like many young females and young gay men, spends an inordinate amount of time in his bathroom.

  3. I am v glad that the boarder seems to be settling in nicely. Glad for you both. And yes, we have had cause to be grateful for our health system. Very grateful. Himself's abdominal surgeries would have bankrupted us without it.

    1. EC, maybe not because you probably would have held decent health insurance, but I am sure that is expensive too, especially for retired people where it isn't paid for by your work place.

  4. You gave me the Big Smile of the delay. He sounds so likeable in every way. Your instincts were bang on.
Yes I've had the best healthcare. Not costing me a dime. Yay Canada and Australia.
Health care is a human right. Wake up USA and with Harris and Walz I do believe you have and will.

    1. I started off pretty low key with him WWW, but as time goes on I point out what I like and what I don't. It is strange, while he uses my cutlery and crockery at times, he also has his own, and mostly uses his own cooking pots. Sadly, I doubt anyone could dismantle the health system that has been built by profit motivated companies in the US, but as Obama did, they can certainly improve it a lot.

  5. You are braver than me to take in a boarder but he does sound like a decent person. Especially if he says hello to Ray Bear every morning.
I winced at the part about your thigh wound 😧

    1. JayCee, the boarder doesn't have a huge impact on my life. He doesn't hang around in the living/dining area, only the kitchen, a lot, and his bedroom and bathroom. He is out most of the day. I did more than wince when the bandage was ripped off. I thanked the nurse for not warning me in advance.

    1. John, I've been thinking about the words boarder, lodger and flatmate. Flatmate implies a joint right to use a place. Lodger seems like there is more to provide, like meals. Boarder is the right word. MySpace, such history.

    1. Bob, he is simple a decent young guy. There are things he doesn't know about how I like things, but he will learn in time. He has committed to November and then will be off somewhere for a couple of months. I'll decide then if I want him back and how much to charge him for luggage storage and to keep his place here. All vague and down the track.

  9. Having a boarder certainly provides that human connection component. I am now playing a mobile game interacting with people from all walks of life

    1. Roentare, yes that was part of my thinking behind taking a boarder on. It helps that he is gay and don't have to explain things about that to him, although I doubt he would be that interested. An online game and connecting with people. I certainly like the connections made via the world of blog.

Your boarder sounds pretty good and respectful which is nice.
Apparently the graft donor area is far more painful than the actual site of the original surgery. Look after yourself.

    1. Thanks for the explanation Merlot. Never mind apparently, it is more painful, in my experience. With a change of dressing, it is feeling somewhat better today.

The young bloke I work with has suggested that he could ret a room off me. I wouldn't mind the cash but he is a neat freak and though I like "neat" I just can't achieve it

    1. Kylie, I said to The Boarder at the initial interview, if either of us doesn't think it is working after one month, we will say so and call it quits, no questions asked. I make assumptions here but if you have one bathroom, his neat freak might be hard. He can be neat freak in his own bedroom however he likes. But hey, if he is neat freak anywhere else, let him have free reign and have let him neaten things up. It is still your home and you are in charge. I don't know if my boarder will return after he goes away in November, but so far it has been a good experience. I am taken out of my introspective and selfish life.

  23. It seems to me that you boarder is a nice guy ! A good start at least. Of course you have to get used to in a month you will see if the good start continues ! Why did you buy a rice cooker ?? I suppose you have a micro wave. I took a bowl, filled it with two cups of rice and 4 cups of water and then cooked it for 10 min (depends on the micro wave) the rice absorbs all the water and comes out the perfect rice !

  24. I've wished to take in a boarder, to help with expenses but have had some very sour roommate experiences. Finding people who don't steal or try to exploit in other ways is very difficult and also, the big issue--only the one bathroom and I'm not sharing it with a stranger. Sounds like you got a winner!
