Funeral wear

I've never owned a suit. I hired formal dinner suits for a couple of occasions.

A few years ago R bought a blue suit. It is ok, but I think he looks better wearing other clothing.

I have black pants of an ok cut, a variety of shirts, smart enough leather shoes and a decent jacket that can do for weddings, funerals and parties.

Before we set off for Mother's funeral our Hair Dresser Friend was here at home with us, to offer comfort and support. She came to the funeral with us.

At some point in a comforting way she patted my arm and then froze. I raised my eyes and head? Your jacket is Cashmere. Take it off. I want to see the labels. She was right, as the label says Cashmere blended with wool.

I had no idea. I know it is a nice jacket and sits in my wardrobe normally covered with dry cleaner plastic.

But isn't Cashmere very expensive? My hazy memory recalls a day when I didn't feel too poor and bought a jacket at a hugely reduced price for $180. It could been this jacket or maybe a hand me down from R, although he didn't know it was Cashmere either. Not showing, but the lining has an iron melt tear. All very strange. I should have taken a photo of the lining melt, and of the jacket on a hanger, but it is covered in plastic now. You'll have to wait for the next marriage or funeral for those.

  1. Cashmere is a gorgeous fabric. And feels soft and comforting. Perfect wear for a funeral.

  2. Oh, cashmere is one luxury I aspire to. So decadently soft and tactile. We must see your jacket Andrew.

  3. That sounds lovely, for any occasion. I get cashmere sweaters cheap at the thriftie. Luxury!

    1. Boud, I've heard of this. I doubt they would be really cheap in our equivalent shops.

    1. An interesting analogy Kirk. I haven't had caviar for many years.

  5. I bought a cashmere blazer from Gazman last month on sale. It was 230 bucks. It kept me warm throughout the winter

  6. I love how Hair Dresser Friend reacted to touching your arm during a funeral! But it is cashmere after all.

  7. I looked up what cashmere is, since I didn't know why its so expensive. Now I do. The hairdresser knowing instantly it was cashmere is impressive.

    1. She managed thrift? stores. We call them opportunity shops, or just op shops. She learnt when the good stuff was donated.

  8. That would be lovely and soft to touch.
Everyone well nearly had a suit once, long time ago now Andrew, then sports clothes and now not many have a tie.

    1. Margaret, ABI Brother was putting on a tie for the funeral. Someone must have said something to him and didn't end up wearing it. I don't recall any of the fifty or so attendees wearing a tie. Thankfully only one was wearing blue denim jeans.

  9. Wait? You're going to make me wait? I'm an old lady! I've only got about thirty years left! I think you should take off the plastic cover and photograph that jacket.
How can someone tell cashmere just by touch? And what is cashmere anyway?

    1. Thirty years River! You are optimistic. Clearly I have another post to write and some photos to take.

  11. There's nothing like a super good fabric. You should wear that jacket everywhere just for the joy of it

    1. Kylie, that is what I have been thinking. It is a waste to have it mostly unused.

  12. As we get older, there are going to be more funerals and memorials, and fewer engagements and weddings. Thus I invested in a navy funeral suit that is suitable all year, and only have to choose a coloured silk scarf and plain hat to match the day's weather.

    1. Outgrow it fashion wise TP? Perhaps. Outgrow it size wise, no. I seem to lose weight but what I have is so badly distributed.

  14. I'm impressed your friend could tell the jacket was cashmere just by touch! I couldn't do that! (I think I've touched cashmere approximately twice in my life.)

  15. I love cashmere, especially when it is woven with silk (to give some more strength). Yes I could tell also by touching it. And wanting to touch it again. :D
