The steaming

This is nice and easy quick post. Jabblog mention a sadly cancelled steam engine festival and reminded me I found this clip a few days ago.

English drivers must curse this vehicle on the streets. I have posted a clip before featuring the Whitby steam bus. Note at around the two minute mark where the bus is really struggling as it slowly climbs a hill. I have learnt from train fans that the best place to watch diesel or steam trains is as the ascend steep banks, as they call hills. What fun!

  1. You can just about hear the 'I think I can, I think I can' chant can't you?

  2. I found the steam truck a blessing in disguise. A lot of festivals are just not making profits I think.

    1. Roentare, there is usually a good and large steam festival in Echuca, maybe somewhere you know.

  3. I loved that video and watched it all. Apart from anything else, Whitby is one of the finest places on this planet. It is a shame that a couple of passengers appear to have been vaping on that bus.

    1. YP, I think the bus was hired for a vapers social gathering outing.

    1. Kirk, one must allow for times for public transport.

  5. Huff, huff, puff, I think I can I think I can...it certainly let out a lot of steam going up. I wonder how often owners of cars have to go through a car wash to get the soot off?

    1. River, and how many passengers end up with soot in their eyes? Never mind the white sheets drying on clotheslines.

  6. Love the sound of it chugging along.

  7. Well it's certainly different and no I wouldn't like to be behind it in a lot of traffic. Getting up that hill seems like an MG from what I've heard.

    1. Those MG vehicles of today. Apparently some of them dont pull very well going up hills..

    2. Ah yes. I see from a Google that there are complaints about their lack of power.

  8. Is the slow, struggling ascent of the steep banks truly safe? Possibly not.

    1. Hels, while it would have primitive braking system, I am sure it would stop the bus rolling back down the hill if the bus stalled on the bank.

  9. What fun! The first bus had steam coming from every orifice.

  10. I had never heard of a steam bus, but it looks fun even if not fast!

    1. Certainly not fast Sami but very modern at the time.

  11. I'd ride that. American comedian Jay Leno owns several steam cars, I had not seen a steam bus.

    1. That's interesting about Leno, TP. Sydney had some steam trams, streetcars but I don't know if you ever had them.

  12. Wow! That's a fun video. I read the description of the video. It was very nice of someone to have recovered it from the landfill and given a new lease of life.

    1. Pradeep, its amazing that it was rescued and restored. Long may the knowledge to keep it running be passed on.

    1. Actually, having now watched the whole video, I'm warming to it. I can see how it's appealing and such a rare experience. Maybe I'll give it a whirl if I ever get up to Whitby.

    2. Steve, just seeing it in real life would be fun enough.
