Who has the biggest?

Someone recently asked if walk in robes, or closets, were common in Australia. While I don't like new homes much, so I don't look at them, I think most would have WIRs, but they are a recent thing. Unless retro fitted, most older homes will not have WIR. This is the layout of HH's apartment, and from her bedroom, she has both an ensuite and walk in robe. She has a huge balcony, but she rarely goes out onto the balcony. These plans are not to scale as a comparison.

We are not sure who had the biggest, because mine is a very different layout. The spare room is close to the living area and kitchen. The next bedroom used by Phyllis and Kosov is more isolated, and me in the west wing, much more isolated. I prefer my layout and HH thinks mine is better, but I don't have the walk in robe that she has. While the apartment walls are pretty well soundproof, the interior walls are not and I would not like a bedroom directly off the living areas like HH's.

My apartment block is unusual for Australia in that it is about 75% three bedroom, 20% two bedroom and 5% two bedroom plus a study.

  1. I think I prefer your layout but if I lived alone either one would suit me fine. Room for all my clothes!

    1. Fashionistas do need lots of clothing space.

  2. Our house was built in the early 70s and there are two walk-in closets; one in the primary suite and one in a secondary bedroom.

  3. If it was just me and maybe one cat, I'd look at one of those tiny homes. There is so much stuff I wouldn't mind clearing out, including from our walk in clothes closet. Alas, my dear man has a hard time letting go of anything, even vicariously with my stuff. On the quiet, I've been tossing out my junk here and there. lol Be well!

    1. Darla, get secretive and get rid of his stuff as well and then deny all knowledge.

  4. I must confess that I had never previously thought about closets and walk-in wardrobes. What a fascinating subject!

  5. That looks a roomy flat/unit/apartment even without a walk in robe. We didn't have one in our house but we do in our unit. They are handy for storing stuff.

    1. They are supposed to be for clothes and shoes Diane, not stuff.

  6. I have never lived in a flat, but a big house for 2 elderly people is starting to look a bit silly. My only firm requirement would be that the balcony is exposed to FULL sunshine for 2 hours at lunchtime.

    1. HH's has sun on her balcony for most of the day. I get nothing in the winter and sun until noon mid summer.

  7. I prefer your layout but I do like her master having a balcony. I admit to living in one very large house and having a whole "dressing room" with our clothes, etc. So walk in closets are pshaw to me after that. It was an old house, loved old houses. And truly massive. But now, just the simple closet. I love the sizes of your apartments.

    1. WWW, there isn't a door from her bedroom to the balcony though. Both balconies aren't really of use for entertaining. A dressing room sounds good to me.

  9. 2 bedrooms plus a study is 3 bedrooms in real estate speak even if the study is the size of a shoe box. Both units look to be a decent size and layout, but I dislike laundry facilities being in bathrooms. I have that here too and I am used to it, but really prefer a separate laundry. I have no walk-in closet and miss that, I had one twice before, but here I don't even have a linen closet! Though I do have a regular wardrobe.

    1. We always had separate laundries River, but I am used to what I now have. I don't use that bathroom aside from the laundry.

  10. Both layouts are good it depends on ones needs. We have a walk-in robe and an ensuite, our house was built before ensuites, but we had a big bedroom and put a wall up and made an ensuite, then there was a room in the middle of the house next to bedroom, don't really know what for so that became the walk-in robe. That probably doesn't make sense..lol

    1. Ah yes Margaret. If a bedroom is large enough or you can steal the space from somewhere else, that is great. I understand.

  11. My one-bedroom apartment has two walk-in closets. I'm not sure if I'm living in the lap of luxury or not.

  12. My bedroom has two closets, one walk in, one with sliding doors. The other bedroom has a nice sized closet, and a small linen closet. Building codes in most areas of the US specify that it is not a bedroom, unless it has a closet. Hence the room without a closet would be classified as a den or office.

    1. It seems you are well ahead of Australia with your building codes, although as I said, I don't know about current onese. My built in wardrobe is large enough for me, but it is supposed to be for a couple. With some sexism, I can't imagine how a woman would fit her clothes into the same I occupy in my wardrobe, along with mine. I already take up the whole space, and I don't have a lot of clothes. Walk in 'robes really need to become standard here.

  13. Older homes here don't have walk in closets but most homes built in the last 30 years do.

    1. Pixie, I think we are rather late to the party of walk in robes but I really think they are commonplace now in new builds, as are ensuites for the master bedroom.

  14. I do prefer WIRs but my house was built in the 1930s so it had standalone ones that aren't as big but they are better than nothing.

  15. I had a walk in wardrobe in the apartment we rented because it was a very small room. So we used it for all our clothes. Otherwise there are some who have and some not it depends the size of the apartment.

    1. We never had one, but I would really like one. But then my single bedroom wardrobe is more than enough for my clothes, and there is lots of other stuffs stored within.

  16. I live in a 6th floor 3 and a half (so one bedroom) apartment. There is one closet in my bedroom. However, there is another large walk-in closet in the apartment...not for hanging clothes, but for storing anything you would need such as suitcase, and other storage items. I am very happy here.

    1. Linda, that is what we would call a linen press and I think I'd love a walk in linen press. Things such at suitcases et al live in my spare bedroom wardrobe.
