While Elephant's Child won't be joining us this week, I am sure River will be up for Sunday Selections
Ray struggled with matters of tech at times, don't we all, but if I didn't know about something, he battled away until he made things work, but with little patience. I heard some bad words at times. He had three sets of earbuds, one for Bluetooth to his tv, so as not to disturb me at night, another for his phone and tablet Bluetooth and I don't know what the other set was used for. He also had a charging pad for his watch, phone and one set of earbuds of the same brand.
Val's was in Melbourne's major thoroughfare, Swanston Street, the busiest tram street in the world. It was much loved.
This usually happens in Autumn.
People patiently waiting for a sandwich at the Fitzroy institution, Nico's.
Phyllis and Kesav discovered this Fitzroy business and it is certainly cheap. I took a look see, and if they have what you want, it will be a bargain. The business takes on stock as donations or cheap prices from manufacturers and retailers of stock not wanted and perhaps nearing its use by date.
Speaking of treasured book shops, so too is the Hill of Content, and after over one hundred years of operation, it had to move, just a short distance up the hill towards State Parliament House. A novel way of moving the books was undertaken.

You have some really good ones here this week.
ReplyDeleteI do like the first set from the small photos collection. I would love to have those on my wall. Those bright yellows and blues really sing to me.
Thanks for the compliment JayCee, and sorry that my usual photos for Sunday Selections are not really good.
DeleteThey are always good! These are just even better!
DeleteYou charmer, you.
DeleteMy father would have bristled at describing Val’s Coffee Lounge as ‘unique’. ‘Is it really the only one in the world?’, he would have grumbled.
ReplyDeleteVictor, ABC radio broadcaster Peter Evans used to be heard in the three east coast capital cities in the breakfast time slot, in your case on 2BL. Peter often enough mentioned is issues with items or situations being 'quite unique', and he went on to compare it to pregnancy, where you can't be a little bit pregnant. Perhaps your father listened to Peter Evans.
DeleteNo matter, his point would have probably quite correct, and maybe like father, like son.
I go to Nicco's regularly. Reading about it makes me salivate more. That Ole hotel is worth a visit for photography reasons. I will give it a try
ReplyDeleteRoentare, I tried to find your recent post about Nicco's to link to it, but I couldn't.
DeleteThe old Fitzroy Pub is looking a bit tragic. It needs, minimally, a smart paint job and bushes in pots outside the building.
ReplyDeleteHels, I think that is the effect the hotel wants, called perhaps Fitzroy grunge.
DeleteA novel way indeed but wouldn't it have been quicker to move stacks of packed boxes? Although this method might have people seeing books they might not have noticed before and then they would come in and buy.
ReplyDeleteAdelaide has one of those "use it up, sell it cheap" supermarkets but I don't remember where, I just remember it is too far for me to get to and get the stuff home.
I like the sets of small photos.
River, the publicity that Hill of Content received has been amazing. Boxes may have been better, but the shop received advertising that money would never pay for.
DeleteLots of variety and places of interest here.
ReplyDeleteThanks Deb. Keeping one's eyes open can mean finding many things to snap.
DeleteI like those photos, nicely captured by you.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Thanks WWW.
DeletePhyllis should go into design.
ReplyDeleteKirk, he does make fashion sketches, hopefully using the graded black pencils I bought him for his birthday, along with his coloured pencils.
DeleteBling on the bottle - nice.
ReplyDeleteAll the photos are lovely, a little hard to see those 6 x 4 photos, but would be interesting all the same.
Margaret, there is plenty of bling around the apartment, and I fight against it, but at times give up.
DeleteWhat a lovely set of photos. In the photo montage, the b/w stand out, somehow always more striking than coloured photos.
ReplyDeleteThelma, I do like black and white photos. It is strange how many colours are in black and white photos.
DeleteI love the book moving - wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty cool JB, in more ways than one.
DeleteA great collection of images.
ReplyDeleteThanks TP. I appreciate that.
DeleteI love that Val's was a safe place for gay people. I wonder where the term camp men came from.
ReplyDeletePixie, some suggest the word came from Campaign Against Moral Persecution, but I really don't know.
DeleteA cool assortment of shots, Andrew.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pat.
DeleteI loved your photos today. Well done! I think that America would be in much better shape if we had 'treasured bookstores'. We don't. The last bookstore that I know of here has struggled for years and has just been sold.
ReplyDeleteThat's disappointing Debby. While there aren't the number here there used to be, clearly there are enough people devoted to the paper products, although the shops have diversified from just books.
DeleteI love Phyllis's blinged-out bottle!
ReplyDeleteI do too Steve, but it has disappeared. Strange things come and go now in The Highrise.
DeleteThree cheers for Val!
ReplyDeleteCloudia, it isn't something I would normally say, but I wish I was older and knew Val's Cafe.
