Sunday Selections

I'm joining with River and others for Sunday Selections.

I will guess this is the horse water trough near Lonsdale and Russel Street, somewhere near there. No sign of a thirsty horse.

The Montague Street Bridge is frequently hit by vehicles. It is low. In the very early 20th century, the pavement was raised to prevent flooding of the roadway. It is 3 metres in height, (see if I can remember how to write it), 9'10".

I felt sorry for the couple who arrived by ferry from our island state of Tasmania in their campervan. They drove under the bridge and Monty took off their roof top aircon unit.

These overhead rubber slapper strips hit the top of over height vehicles to warn them, yet the warning is ignored and trucks and vans proceed, only to have the top of their vehicles removed by Monty.

It is nice to see people battle a chess game in public.

With a tram stop and the entrance to Melbourne Central Station and shopping centre across the road, the State Library forecourt is always so busy.

Aw, bless. He was very good.

A dog cooling off at the water feature at Prahran Square.

Before Ray died, we had bought the airfryer, and he was becoming expert at cooking with airfryer. The barbeque was no longer being used. Hippie Niece and her partner now have it, and are using it. Even though you barbeque with the lid down, it still made a mess with fat everywhere.

All stuff that has gone to the charity shop.

A handsome dude in an advertising display at a tram stop. His teeth are a bit too white.

  1. Ah...I would have taken all that white crockery off your hands. All my tableware is plain and white. Saves a lot of bother in replacing any breakages.
I thought that these days teeth could not be too white. Just wear sunglasses when young, trendy people smile.

    1. JayCee, subsequently I have looked at crockery at stores, and seen little I like. The one set I did really like was not dishwasher or microwave proof.
I just dislike unnaturally white teeth, a turn off for me. But I suppose other qualities could override my issue.

  2. The murals underneath Montague bridge are great. I never notice one down there. Thanks for images to remind me of Melb while abroad

    1. I had not noticed them either Roentare. I was too busy looking out for tall vehicles.

  3. A chess game in public is a brilliant idea. But unless the photo was taken in winter, why are people wearing puffer jackets?

    1. Hels, it probably was in winter. These are mostly photos from last year.

  4. I was so curious about the water trough. I had to go off and read. It says there are 19 of them about Melbourne. So...I am curious. Do they still offer carriage rides on those busy streets?

I love the glimpses of your city. It would have been nice to hear the little boy play, and the giant chess set looks as if it draws a nice crowd.

    1. Debby, the horse carriages used to run in the city's main street, Swanston, a street not for cars, but trams, bicycles and pedestrians. A blinkered horse turned its head right and was whacked very hard by a passing tram. They are now restricted to a small parkland area.
I will record the violinist if I see him again, and feel obliged to donate $5.

  5. More very interesting pictures of your city. That is a very low bridge!

    1. It is Deb, and there is now part of tram depot on top of the bridge. It would cost millions to raise the bridge height now.

  6. A "very good" junior violinist? The kids in Rundle Mall here are more likely to scrape and scratch their bows across the strings making screechy squawky sounds that faintly resemble music. the old horse trough is a welcome sight, plenty of water fall all the city birds and possibly a few dogs too. Love the dog in the fountain.
Why after all these years does that bridge NOT have a sign saying Low Bridge Clearance 9 1/2 feet or whatever that is in meters. Negligence on whatever council and can they be sued?
Outdoor chess? I don't even play indoor chess. My brain doesn't like to work that hard.

    1. Truly River, the violin lad knew his stuff. He is older than he looks. I've seen him around for quite some time.
On the farm, we had a dog who would plunge into a water trough at any opportunity.
There is a lot of signage before the bridge, including the straps that will hit the top of a tall vehicle.

    1. I did get rid of them Kirk, but I have more. There is one given to us by a bar person at... Port Authority, NYC.

  8. Old things no longer in use are often useful to someone as treasure.
We have a barbecue and use it, we don't use our airfryer a great deal..Have seen many people lose the tops of their vehicles in photos and on the TV under that low bridge. We never went that way!
That dog has sense on a hot day. The little boy looks as if he knows what he's doing, be interesting to listen to him.

    1. Margaret, I have ridden myself of so much stuff that I would never have used. We had enough to cater for a large number of people. Those days have gone.
It seems simple to me. Know the height of your vehicle. But it seems more difficult than that.
Yes, very cool to see the doge cooling off in the fountain. Children do too.

    1. TP, yes I know of one in your country (4'11' Bridge?). I think there is an English one too. The stupidity is amazing, wherever.

  10. It must be entertaining to live near that low bridge, Andrew.

    1. Pat, I think there may be a high rise building or two there, otherwise it is industrial. If you were in a high rise, you could have a camera directed at the bridge and be the first to sell photos or videos to the media.

  11. I find it quite satisfying to get rid of things I will no longer use. And we get a 20% coupon off a future purchase when we donate to one of the places here. You are doing the right thing, keeping on top of it all.
