With the opening of Anzac Station and the Metro Tunnel this year, South Yarra Station will be less used by me.
To travel on the Pakenham or Cranbourne lines, I will use Anzac Station as those trains will cease to travel via South Yarra Station, diving underground just before they reach the station.
Anzac Station is a five minute walk for me, or one stop on a tram. I am not sure whether I will continue to use what will become less crowded trams to travel to the city, or use the train. Assuming the train has a very frequent clock face service, I will almost certainly use it to travel to the northern area of the city, using Museum Station, but only real life travel can tell me whether it will be better to reach the closer Town Hall Station. The slow part of the tram trip is once it reaches the city, with traffic lights very hostile to trams.
Time will tell. If travelling by train to areas west of the city, while it may take a little longer, I often catch a tram to South Yarra, and then a train that runs through the city and out to the west. It seems when the Metro Tunnel opens, these through trains will revert to using the underground City Loop, although possible another line might offer a through service from South Yarra Station.
I quite like South Yarra Station, though it has changed a lot over a couple of decades, with the front rebuilt and opened up wider. Pre Covid, it was neck to neck with Caulfield Station as the busiest outside of the city stations. This will certainly change when the Metro Tunnel opens, with quite a substantial drop in patronage at South Yarra and an increase at Caulfield.
Here are a few photos of South Yarra Station. There is lots of seating to the left of this photo, and the level boarding tram stops could not be any closer. If you look at my header photo, the station is just before the tall buildings.
I think the modern timberwork works quite well. Until I looked at these photos, I had not noticed how nice the windows are. Gates are now plentiful and to the right of this photo is the ticket office.
It's a burgeoning, growing community, and it's good that transportation links are growing alongside.

DeleteWhen we come to Melbourne we use both train and tram but when the train development began they cut out the through tram to Carlton from South Yarra which was disappointing. Can you get them to fix it Andrew and while you are at it tell them to put user friendly trams with knee saving steps rather than the old ones they use on Chapel Street . I love Melbourne trams.

At least I know which Anon you are now. That would be route 8 to Melbourne Uni, I suppose. I can't see that changing. The long E Class trams can't run in Swanston Street. I would guess it will be about three years before low floor trams operate in Chapel Street. I don't think the trains are too dirty. I see cleaners going through them at times as the trains are operating. But it only takes one nasty mess to put you off.

ReplyDeleteJust like all the old stations on the Frankston line. There was a time when touching anything with a whiff of heritage was sacrilege but times are a'changing.
Merlot, they haven't done a bad job of retaining the heritage aspects of South Yarra. Aside from the modern information systems and wider mouth, it is not so different.

ReplyDeleteJ, I will guess it will be express Caulfield or Malvern to Anzac Station. The train in theory can travel at a very high speed. As it dives underground before South Yarra Station, it should be about two minutes to Anzac Station and then two minutes to Town Hall Station.

DeleteIs that last photo the "steep" ramp? It doesn't look too bad, just a long incline, probably similar to the Adelaide Railway Station ramp which I still use.

ReplyDeleteThelma, we spent a couple of days there five years ago and used the ok tram. It wasn't a fast service but quite ok. The grimy industrial cities in the north of England have and are changing quickly.
DeleteI used the light rail system in Phoenix to go to the airport yesterday morning. A nice ride and for someone my age, only $1. It is a nice, but not extensive system.

DeleteSeveral decades ago our US state of Ohio supposedly planned a high speed rail line between the northeast and southwestern regions. My husband and I would have continued visiting family more if it had been completed and well maintained. Ah, well. We did meet family members halfway a few days ago. Best wishes, my dear.
